Julio Gonzalez Set For Return
By William Trillo
The last time I had
heard about former Light Heavyweight title holder Julio
Gonzalez he was living on his Baja California Ranch,
tilling the soil and growing Alfalfa that supplied many
of the ranch hands who had hungry cows to feed in the
area.
The next I heard he was back at his second home, that
being the La Habra boxing club, getting ready for July
17th bout in Baja California. Gonzalez will be taking on
Mexican Cruiserweight Champ Felipe Romero in a 12 round
battle for that belt.
As it turns out Romero is from the same area as Julio in
Baja so not only is the belt on the line but maybe a
little hometown bragging rights will come into play as
well.
It was back when Gonzalez was a youth that he was
picking Garlic in the hot California fields before he
took on a very good career in boxing. Maybe working in
the soil again got his competitive juices flowing, maybe
it's just a coincidence.
Gonzalez put it this
way, "I had always wanted to fight for a Mexican belt
but it just never happened. Then I got this call and it
was something I wanted to do. It's not about this being
a comeback, it was just an opportunity to go after
something I always have wanted."
When I pressed Gonzalez about a comeback and what he
might do if he wins, Gonzalez laughed and said,
" I am not calling this a comeback. Win or lose Let me
see how my body feels after this fight, I'm getting
older now you know!"
Yes, you and me both my friend. Best of luck to you!
