Haye Stops Ruiz In 9,
Scoring 4 Knockdowns Along The Way
David Haye (now 24-1, 22 KO's) retained the WBA Heavyweight
Title with a win over former champion John Ruiz when the
corner threw in the towel in the 9th round.
The fight started quick when a right hand to the head from
Haye sent Ruiz down within moments of the first round. Ruiz
was up on wobbly legs, walking into another assault from
Haye, that ended with a right hand behind the head as Ruiz
was on his way down a second time. The referee ruled a
second knockdown, but also deducted a point from Haye for
hitting behind the head.
Ruiz regained his senses over the next few rounds and
stalked the constantly backing Haye. Haye showed quick
movement against the slow plodding Ruiz.
In round 4, Haye was comfortably fighting with both his
hands by his waist, pop-shotting Ruiz with quick jabs and
right hands, one at a time. Ruiz came on strong at the end
as Haye appeared tired.
In round 5, Haye staggered Ruiz again, and once again
dropped him with a combination of a right hands to the face
and to the back of the head. Ruiz complained to the referee,
but was not acknowledged.
In round 6, a combination from Haye that involved a right
hand to the chin, then several continuous shots behind the
head at a hurt Ruiz, ended with a uppercut to the chin,
sending Ruiz down for the fourth time in the fight.
In round 9, a final assault from Haye prompted cornerman
Miguel Diaz to throw in the towel and save Ruiz from further
punishment.
Final time was 2:01 of the 9th. Ruiz falls to 44-9-1 with 30
KO's.
