It was the Gary Russell Jr. show at Club Nokia – LA Live as Russell pitched a shutout against Guadalupe De Leon over six featherweight rounds. Russell (13-0) started the contest by firing 15-20 unanswered jabs and ended it by punishing De Leon with unanswered power punches.

In between Russell did whatever he pleased. De Leon (8-12) did little offensively, preferring to keep his guard held high. When De Leon did open up Russell countered him with short hooks and left hands. A well timed hook in the waning moments of the third nearly ended the fight.

By the fourth De Leon was broken down. Russell followed De Leon around the ring picking him apart with straight left hands or lathering him with blistering combinations. All three judges scored the fight 60-54.

“My speed is always going to be a factor in my fights,” explained Russell. “Any smart team will try to neutralize my speed by coming inside. I definitely needed to work on my inside game and the key tonight was to touch the body to bring his hands down.”
 

Yakubu Amidu defeated Noe Lopez Jr. by a wide unanimous decision in a six round junior lightweight contest. Amidu (14-2-1) dictated the action by walking Lopez down with a steady diet of jab, right hand.

Lopez (7-6) asserted himself briefly in the third and again in the fourth but couldn’t sustain the pressure over an entire round. The judges scored the contest 59-55 and 60-54 twice.
 

Fidel Maldonado Jr. simply overwhelmed John Willoughby. Maldonado (5-0) jumped on Willoughby from the opening bell and didn’t let up until the fight was stopped 2:35 later.

Willoughby (2-6) didn’t protest the stoppage though he appeared clear and was still defending himself.
 

Trevor McCumby made a triumphant professional debut by stopping fellow cruiserweight Sharieff Hayes 1:20 into the third round.

Despite telegraphing the right, McCumby (1-0) was able to land the big punch repeatedly.

Hayes (0-1) was dazed in the first and second before being stopped in the third.
 

Super middleweight Dion Savage rocked Eddie Hunter to sleep at 1:05 of the third to run his unblemished record to 10 wins without a defeat. Hunter (4-4-2) stunned both Savage and the crowd in the first when he buckled Savage’s knees with an overhand right.

Savage regrouped in the second and was in control of the third when he dropped Hunter with the fight-ending punch. Referee David Mendoza immediately waived off the contest.
 

Welterweights Ramon Valadez and Aaron Anderson engaged in a spirited four round bout dominated in the ring and on the scorecards by Valadez. Anderson (1-9) spent more time jawing and clowning than he did fighting.

Valadez (3-1) kept his cool and focused on the fight. Valadez dropped Anderson in the third and nearly ended the fight in the fourth before the bell sounded. All three scorecards tallied 40-35.
 

Led into the ring by grandfather Jack and father Shane, Shane Mosley Jr. fought, and dropped, a three round amateur bout to fellow junior middleweight Ivan Lazaro.

After working behind an effective jab in the first, Mosley Jr. was outworked over the next two rounds. Lazaro earned the nod by being the more aggressive fighter.

“I see him in the gym and I see him in the ring and he’s two different people”, said trainer and father Sugar Shane of his son.

“When you fight you have to believe in yourself to the point where you believe no one can beat you.”
