Sources Say Oscar De La Hoya
Was Battling Alcohol, Cocaine & Infidelity Problems
Retired boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya was battling alcohol
and cocaine issues before entering a California
rehabilitation facility, TMZ reported Monday, citing unnamed
sources. TMZ first reported Saturday that De La Hoya had
voluntarily checked himself into a treatment facility for a
substance abuse problem. Sources reportedly close to the
former boxing champ have told the entertainment news website
that De La Hoya began drinking and using cocaine after
experiencing fidelity problems in his marriage.
De La Hoya, 38, married Millie Corretjer in 2001. The couple
has two children.
Sources told TMZ De La Hoya checked into the rehab facility
within the past few weeks "to address certain health and
personal issues." The name and location of the facility and
the exact nature of his substance abuse problem remain
unclear.
"After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize
that there are certain issues that I need to work on," De La
Hoya said in a statement. "Like everyone, I have my flaws,
and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid
to admit and address those flaws."
The 1992 Olympic gold medal winner asked for "respect and
privacy" as he undergoes treatment.
De La Hoya had a career record of 39-6, winning 10 world
titles in six different weight classes before retiring in
2009.
