Richard Schaefer’s Thoughts On
Andrade vs. George Situation
By William Trillo
Representatives from Golden Boy were tight lipped after Leon
Margules advised his fighter Donovan George to pull out of
his scheduled fight with Librado Andrade this past Saturday
night but Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was not so quiet
on Monday morning in Los Angeles.
When asked about his thoughts on the last minute decision by
Margules to pull out of the fight Schaefer said. “Librado
came to fight and I am very disappointed that his opponents
came just to pack their bags. It was very unprofessional and
uncalled for and I hope the IBF will install Librado as the
mandatory for Lucian Bute.”
I asked Schaefer if he found the timing strange considering
the fighters were in the same ring 48 hours before the fight
during the public open work-out and found it troubling that
no one complained at that time and Margules himself was not
even in attendance.
Schaefer agreed, “Yes, you don’t wait to file the protest
until it’s time to walk into the ring. I don’t know why they
waited until then. I don’t think they ever wanted to fight
and just came up with an excuse. It’s unprofessional. It
hurt us with the network, audience and the sponsors. It’s
horrible and I do hope the IBF will do the right thing,
which is to appoint Librado the mandatory for Bute because
everything else is quite frankly unacceptable.”
