According To Ayrapetyan,
Lemieux Hits Harder Than Martinez
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL ---- The Armenian boxer Alberto Ayrapetyan lost
only twice by KO or TKO in his career. The first time was
against the Argentinian Sergio Gabriel Martinez in 2005 in
Spain, the second time Friday evening in the ring of the
Bell Centre, against the young Montrealer David Lemieux (23
years old).
In 2005, Martinez (50-2-2), the actual WBC middleweight
champion and fourth best fighter pound for pound in the
world, stopped Ayrapetyan (20-4-0) in the 11th round of a
WBC Latinos championship fight. Friday, Lemieux floored
twice Ayrapetyan and stopped him after only 1.26 minute of
action in the second round of a bout scheduled for 10.
“Really, I did not expect to be hit so hard,” admitted the
Armenian after the bout. “Lemieux is incredible. Never in my
life, in training or in a fight, I have been hit with so
much power. And don't forget that I fought Sergio Gabriel
Martinez in 2005.”
Lemieux (28-2-0) won 27 times by KO and TKO in 30 pro
fights. GYM promoter Yvon Michel said, “Some boxing fans
stopped believing in David when he lost two fights in a row
last year, but don't forget he was a very young fighter with
no experience, who was fighting two veterans with a solid
background on the international level (the Mexican Marco
Antonio Rubio and the Montrealer Joachim Alcine, a former
WBA super welterweight champion of the world). David is
learning everyday in the gym, in working with the trainer
Marc Ramsay and good sparring partners, and he is becoming
more and more mature. What you have seen Friday evening,
it's just a beginning. Lemieux will continue to learn, and
watch him in 2013, 2014 and 2015! I believe more and more
that he will be a star in the next years, not only in
Montréal, but everywhere on the planet.”
Lemieux was ranked third by the WBC in 2011, when he fought
Rubio. He won his last three bouts by KO or TKO.
