Carcamo Now Faces Montiel In
Commerce

Fernando Carcamo had a fight scheduled this Friday night at
the Commerce Casino in Commerce, CA against Herbert Acevedo.
That changed, and it became Robert Rodriguez. But before he
got comfortable with that opponent, it switched again. Now
the 21-year-old from Senora, Mexico will face the tough and
undefeated Alex Montiel. Montiel brings with him a record of
21-0, with 17 KOs, and will be making his U.S. professional
debut.
But none of that matters to Carcamo. Fernando, 10-3 with 7
KOs, is coming off a huge upset win over Fidel Maldonado Jr.
back in April. He got the TKO victory at 1:10 in only the
second round, after knocking Maldonado down twice, once in
each round. By winning the fight, he also became the WBC
Youth World Silver lightweight champion.
Carcamo will be making his fourth appearance in the States
for his fight on Friday. He has made a good showing of
himself here so far, winning two of the three. His only loss
was against the talented Andrew Cancio, and that was by
majority draw. But he feels prepared for this fight.
“My training camp has been really good,” he said. “With that
camp, we’re ready for anybody. Whoever I face, I’ll be fine
– I don’t care.”
Compared to a lot of other fighters, Carcamo really does not
have the same amount of experience. “I had 14 fights as an
amateur,” he said. “I was 16 years old. I turned pro one
year later.”
But right now Fernando is making up for lost time and
concentrating on fighting. “Boxing is my number one
priority, but I want to have my school.”
That’s right, his school. Carcamo is doing some planning for
his future, and while boxing is in the lead at the present
time, right now it is education that takes the place of
hobbies.
“Actually, I’m at the University. I study International
Business. I will graduate in eight months. I will have
something to fall back on. Boxing is really hard and
something can happen to you at any time. So when you can’t
box anymore, you have to have something.”
Fernando lives and trains in Mexico, but that doesn’t mean
there are no plans to make a move at some point.
“I don’t know yet,” he explained. “Maybe when I’m through
with school, but right now my training camp is here. There
is no rush on that. I’m doing great training there and I
have great people around me. Everything’s good right now,
but we’ll see in the future what happens.”
Right now however, it’s all about his fight with Montiel.
“It’s gonna be a great fight. He’s a Mexican too, so it will
definitely be a good one.”
Look for a lot of action coming out of the Commerce Casino
this Friday. Carcamo is hoping to make a statement against
the unbeaten Montiel.
