Alvarez Ready To Face Kovalev
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - Eleider Alvarez, (12-0-0), a Colombian fighter
living in Montréal since the beginning of his pro boxing
career in 2009, is ready to be the next Sergey Kovalev's
opponent. His promoter, Yvon Michel, confirmed it to the WBO
championship committee.
Kovalev (22-0-0), a Russian, became WBO light heavyweight
champion of the world August 17th in Cardiff, Wales, in
beating the British Nathan Cleverly by TKO in less than four
rounds. Cleverly suffered of his first lost (26-1-0).
“I talked to Eleider and his trainer, Marc Ramsay, and both
told me yes for a fight Alvarez-Kovalev,” said Yvon Michel.
“Eleider is actually ranked seventh contender by the WBO,
but all fighters ranked in front of him actually, have other
projects than fight Kovalev on a short term. Eleider is
available and motivated to fight the WBO champion. Then,
don't be surprised if Eleider becomes the next Kovalev
opponent. It would be a terrific fight between these two
dangerous punchers.”
NABO and NABA North American champion, Alvarez has only 12
bouts of experience in pro boxing, but he has a solid
background in amateur boxing, as member of the Colombia
national team.
