Riverside’s, CA., Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (36-3, 31KOs) knocked out Seth Mitchell (26-2-1, 19KOs) only 2 minutes 26 seconds into round one to capture the WBC International Heavyweight crown on a special edition of Showtime’s SHOBOX series. The main event was originally scheduled for ten rounds. Golden Boy Promotions hosted the fight in association with Goossen Tutor promotions at the Fantasy Springs Casino and Resort in Indio, CA.

Seth Mitchell, 31, kicked off the action with a pounding straight right that was set up by a jab. Chris Arreola felt Mitchell’s power and walked straight through it. Arreola calmly stalked Mitchell; eventually landing an overhand right that had him out on his feet. Mitchell survived by holding on to Arreola until he eventually fell on his back.

Chris Arreola, 32, waited patiently for Referee Jack Reese to resume the action. He then went on to land another devastating overhand right and a series of other blows, which floored Seth Mithchell. The former Michigan State linebacker survived the knockdown but could not withstand the flurry of blows the followed.

Jack Reese stopped the action 2 minutes 26 seconds of round number one. Arreola was punishing a vividly hurt Mitchell against the ropes at the time of the stoppage.


Efrain Esquivias KO’s Raul Marquez

Efrain Esquivias (17-2-1, 10KOs) knocked out famed Raul Marquez (41-9, 37KOs) on the night’s co-featured bout. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. stepped in to halt the action 19 seconds into round nine after Esquivias floored Raul Marquez with a vicious lead right. Marquez got up off the canvas, but was in no shape to continue the fight.

Raul Marquez, 38, is the younger brother of the legendary Juan Manuel Marquez. Famed Mexican trainer Nacho Beristain backed his pedigree. The future hall of famer began the fight by methodically stalking Efriain Esquivias behind his rangy left jab. He also worked in some stealth left uppercuts in round number two and may have taken the first three rounds on the scorecards.

Efrain Esquivias wasn’t going to lay dormant. Several overhand rights made Rafael Marquez think twice in round three. The following round saw Esquivias up end Marquez with a flurry in the closing seconds.

 The Carson, CA native carried that momentum into the fifth round, which saw him pepper Marquez with everything in the tool shed.

Efrain Esquivias, 30, continued to apply pressure. He was most successful when fighting in close quarters, minimizing Rafael Marquez’s reach. He continued to pepper Marquez with sneaky left uppercuts and overhand rights.

Marquez came back at the end of round seven and clobbered Esquivias with several thudding blows. Esquivias regained control in the following round before closing the show with the electric lead right.


Ryan Caballero Defeats Lyonell Kelly

Ryan Caballero (2-0) earned a unanimous decision victory against Compton’s Lyonell Kelly (0-1). At the final bell, all three judges saw the bout 40-36.

Ryan Caballero proved to be as exciting as his older brother, talented prospect Randy Caballero. Ryan came out strong and immediately displayed his pedigree in front of an adoring partisan crowd. Lyonell was never a real hazard. Ryan Caballero’s aggression was too much.


Ronnie Rios Remains Unbeaten

Santa Ana’s Ronnie Rios (22-0, 10KOs) earned a unanimous decision victory against Jose Angel Baranza (36-28-2, 28KOs). Rios controlled the featherweight scrap from the opening bell.

He landed a picturesque combo in round two that vividly displayed his dominance. He proceeded to end the following round with an overhand right.

Jose Angel Baranza, 37, is a gutty veteran with a lot of rounds of experience; albeit, all the experience in the world couldn’t have helped him pull off an upset against the highly touted Ronnie Rios. Two judges scored the bout 80-72, while the remaining judge saw it 78-74.


Rico Ramos Knocks Out Jean Carlos Velasquez

Rico Ramos (22-3, 12KOs) viciously knocked out Jean Carlos Velasquez (15-0, 11KOs) with a violent left hook. The perfectly placed left hook ended an otherwise uneventful bout that Ramos may have been losing on the cards. The discussed hook also sent Velasquez to sleep. Referee Lue Moret immediately halted the action 1 minute 36 seconds into round number ten.

Jean Carlos Velasquez had Rico Ramos on his heels for the first half of the bout. He worked his foe’s body well, which opened Ramos’ defense. A speedy combo compromised of a right hook followed by a left hook landed in round five. The discussed combo sent Ramos on his knees.

Pico Rivera’s, CA., Rico Ramos made referee Lue Moret’s standing eight count. At this point, the fight was being fought in the middle of the ring. Rico Ramos was now walking down Jean Carlos Velasquez. The fight remained competitive as both fighters continued to land crisp blows. Although, Velasquez seemed to be winning the fight going into the final round where Ramos ended it with the perfectly placed left hook.


Maurice Lee Pitches Shutout

Maurice Lee (3-0, 2KOs) scored a unanimous decision victory against Jean Carlos Sanchez (1-2). All three judges scored the four round lightweight bout 40-36.

Maurice Lee’s right hook began to work early, landing unopposed. Joe Gossen’s fighter worked effectively behind his stick, following up with crisp left hooks.


Joet Gonzalez Decisions David Reyes

Joet Gonzalez (5-0, 1KO) scored a unanimous decision victory against David Reyes (2-5-1) in a four round junior featherweight. Joet Gonzalez is a budding star. The latter was clearly on display as his skill overshadowed David Reyes’ heart. At the final bell, two judges scored the bout 40-36 for Gonzalez. The remaining judge followed suit with a score of 39-37.


Justin DeLoach Continues To Win

Justin DeLoach (4-0, 2KOs) knocked out Carl Hill (1-7, 1KO) 2 minutes 50 seconds into round number three. The bout was originally schedule for four rounds in the junior middleweight division.

Justin DeLoach completely overwhelmed his foe with a focus torso attack from the outset of the fight. Referee Jack Reese stopped the fight after DeLoach landed a flurry of nasty body blows, which met no response from the overmatched and defenseless Grant Hill.


Ricky Lopez Wins

Ricky Lopez (10-2, 4KOs) scored a unanimous decision victory against Pablo Batrise (3-8-1). The four round junior lightweight bout was the opening fight of the card.
