Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (47-1-1, 32KOs) was gifted a unanimous decision victory against Brian Vera (23-7, 14KOs) in the 10 round light heavyweight main event of HBO’s World Championship Boxing. Chavez Jr.’s victory was televised live from the Stub Hub Center in Carson, CA and was hosted by Top Rank Promotions in association with Promociones Zanfer and Banner Promotions.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., 27, had problems making weight for tonight’s main event. Yahoo’s Greg Beacham reported that he came in 10 pounds heavier than what was originally agreed upon. Chavez had to pay Brian Vera an undisclosed amount of money to make the fight happen. This is after the original contractual weight was moved from 163 pounds to 168 pounds. It eventually was set at 173 pounds handily giving Chavez Jr. a clear advantage in the ring. Nevertheless, the fight went on as planned.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. began the fight circling the ring to his left, an attempt to set up his left hook, which landed several times. He went on to land a nice overhand right that was set up by a left hook in round two. Brian Vera was never really hurt in the early rounds but was stunned in rounds five and seven.

Brian Vera, 31, fought a beautiful fight in front a much bigger foe. He was active and willing to stand in front of the stronger J.C. Chavez Jr. Vera often came in throwing two or three consecutive jabs and always followed up with strong rights. The jabs had taken a toll on Chavez’s swollen right eye by round four. His counterpart continued to circle the ring to his left, often stepping into Vera’s right hands. He landed a crisp right hook in the closing seconds of round number seven but the blow did not hurt Chavez Jr. who responded with a nasty left hook that wobbled Vera. At this point, Vera was beginning to pick up the pace while Chavez seemed content on attempting to land one big blow at a time.

Texas’ Brian Vera continued to work behind his stick and vividly took rounds eight and nine. He connected on a picturesque combo in round eight. Round nice saw him in total control of the ring. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. needed a knockout in the final round to win the fight. He never got the knockout and most saw Vera pulling off the upset.

The only people that didn’t see Vera winning were the three judges ringside who literally handed Chavez Jr. the victory. Judge Gwen Adair scored the bout 96-94, Carla Caiz saw it 97-93 and Marty Denkin had it 98-92.

Oscar Valadez KO’s Joe Morales

Oscar Valadez (6-0, 6KOs) knocked out Joe Morales (20-14, 4KOs) in round number two of the scheduled six round super featherweight fight.

Jose Ramirez Retains Perfect Record

US Olympian Jose Carlos Ramirez (6-0, 4KOs) earned a hard fought unanimous decision victory against the rugged Daniel Calzada (8-9-2, 2KOs). Judge’s Carla Caiz, Jerry Cantu, and Max DeLuca all scored the bout 40-36 for Ramirez.

Josesito Felix Jr. Knocks Out Joseph Laryea In Round One

Jose Felix Jr. (25-0-1, 20KOs) knocked out Joseph Laryea (17-9, 13KOs) only 2 minutes 37 seconds into round number one. Referee Ray Corona halted the fight after Joseph Laryea failed to get up off the canvas following a vicious combo that culminated with a nasty right hook. The fight was originally scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.

Daniel Sandoval Out-Slugs Richard Gutierrez Through Eight

Daniel Sandoval (33-2, 30KOs) earned a much-deserved unanimous decision victory against Richard Gutierrez (27-11, 17KOs). Mexico’s Sandoval was too strong from Colombia’s Gutierrez who never found a way to attack the Gaudalajara native throughout the eight round light middleweight fight. Judge’s Jerry Cantu and Marty Denkin both saw the fight 79-73, while Max DeLuca saw the fight 80-72 for Sandoval.

Karim Mayfield Outclasses Christopher Fernandez

Karim Mayfield (18-0-1, 11KOs) knocked out Christopher Fernandez (21-16-1, 13KOs) in round number eight of the scheduled 10 round welterweight scrap. Mayfield scored the first knockdown of the fight in round two, and then followed up with two more in round four. The last knockdown in round four was a result of a penetrating right hook followed by a quick left.

San Francisco’s Karim Mayfield continued to apply pressure after his early success. His relentless attack eventually broke down a battered but valiant Christopher Fernandez. Several consecutive left hooks directed to Fernandez’s torso ended the bout. Ray Corona stopped the fight at the 2 minutes 59 second mark of round eight.

Gabino Saenz Stops Dominic Coca In Round One

Gabino “Showtime” Saenz (11-0, 8KOs) earned a first round TKO victory against an overmatched Dominic Coca (8-5, 2KOs). The super featherweight fight was originally scheduled for six rounds. Referee Lou Moret stepped in to halt the bout 2 minutes 27 seconds into round number one.

Indio’s, CA, Gabino Saenz’s left hook was unstoppable. Dominic Coca had no defense for Saenz powerful hook, which consistently connected. Coca tasted the canvas only a minute or so after the fight began. He survived the knockdown but was unable to stop the barrage of left hooks that followed. Referee Lou Moret stopped the fight after Saenz’s landed two thudding straight rights.

Diego Magdaleno Pitches Shutout

Diego Magdaleno (24-1, 9KOs) scored the second unanimous decision win of the night by out-working Edgar Riovalle (36-15-2, 25KOs). Magdaleno’s fluid aggression was evident from the opening bell. He overwhelmed Edgar Riovalle with crisp combos. His dominance was on vivid display as he landed a one-two combo to the body, followed by a right hook upstairs. He continued to overpower Riovalle with lightning quick combos for the remainder of the 10 round lightweight fight. Judge’s Carls Caiz, Marty Denkin and Max DeLuca all scored the bout alike 100-90.

Matt Korobov Decisions Grady Brewer

Matt Korobov (21-0, 12KOs) earned a unanimous decision victory against Grady Brewer (30-17, 16KOs) in the opening bout of the night. The eight round super middleweight scrap saw Korobov pummel an overmatched Grady Brewer. Judge’s Marty Denkin and Jerry Cantu saw the bout 80-71 for Korobov. Max Deluca followed with a score of 79-72 for Korobov.
