Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Pascal & Alvarez Will Fight
September 28
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The promoter of the GYM Group, Yvon Michel,
should confirm next Thursday in a press conference that Jean
Pascal and Eleider Alvarez, two of the most important
fighters in Canada, will fight September 28th at Bell
Centre, in preliminary bouts preceding the WBC light
heavyweight championship of the world opposing the new
champion, the Montrealer Adonis Stevenson (21-1-0), and the
former IBF champion, the American Tavoris Cloud (24-1-0).
The fight Stevenson-Cloud will be televise by HBO.
Pascal (27-2-1), the former WBC light heavyweight champion,
should fight George Blades (23-4-0), a fighter of 38 years
old from Indianapolis, and Alvarez (12-0-0), a Colombian
living in Montréal since the beginning of his pro boxing
career in 2009, will face another Colombian, the veteran
Edison Miranda (35-8-0). Pascal wants to to be active next
month to be better prepared for his big match up with the
Montrrealer Lucian Bute (31-1-0) in January in Montréal.
Miranda will fight in Montréal for the second time. In 2010,
he lost by TKO in less than four rounds against Bute at Bell
Centre, in an IBF super middleweight championship of the
world.
Mendez Beats Usmanee
Arash Usmanee, a fighter from Afghanistan who is training in
Montréal, tried to win his first major title Friday evening
in Verona, New York. He failed. The Dominican Argenis Mendez
(21-2-1) made a successful defense of his IBF super
featherweight championship of the world, in beating Usmanee
by majority decision. Two judges pick Mendez as winner, with
identical scores of 115-113, and the third judge score a
draw (114-114).As usual, Usmanee, a solid puncher, was
extremely aggressive, but was unable to put the champion in
real trouble.
