Marc Ramsay: "Abregu Is Like Carl Froch Offensively, But He
He Does Not Have His Chin"

MONTRÉAL – Just a few hours before his flight to Buenos
Aires, Argentina, where he will be involved in the most
important bout of hiscareer, Antonin Décarie seems calm,
confident and determined. The fighter from Montréal met the
press Wednesday at the GYM Group gymin the North Side of
Montréal.
Décarie (27-1-0) is going to South America to face the
Argentinian Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1-0 ) in a WBC
welterweight interim championshipof the world. April 27th at
the Atletico Velez Sarsfield football stadium of Buenos
Aires, Décarie and Abregu will be nose to nose just before
the WBC middleweight championship of the world opposing the
Argentinian Sergio Gabriel Martinez (50-2-2) and the British
Martin Murray (25-0-1). The two fights will be televised by
HBO.
“If you believe I will be intimated to fight in front of
50,000 fans of Martinez and Abregu, you are wrong,” said
Décarie. “The crowd can scream and chant the Abregu's name
all night long, when the fight will starts, it will be
strictly between Abregu and me. No fan will help him when
the first bell will ring. Trust me, I am perfectly prepared
mentally and physically for this fight, certainly the most
important challenge of my career.”
Décarie saw Abregu in action several times on TV. “Abregu
reminds me Arturo Gatti,” said Décarie. “Each time he goes
on the floor, he got back on his knees, fights like a pit
bull in rage and puts his opponent in trouble. If I provoke
one, two or three knockdowns April 27th, I will have to be
very wise defensively right after. I know this guy will come
back each time with a clear intention to knock me out.”
Décarie likes his chance to win by unanimous decision.
“Abregu is mean and strong physically, but I really believe
I am better than him technically,” said Décarie. “A lot of
people believe it will be almost impossible for me to win on
points against an Argentinian in Buenos Aires, but I am not
worried. The judges will come from neutral countries, and
the fight will be televised live by HBO. It can be
embarrassing for a judge to be unfair in a HBO boxing show.”
Marc Ramsay, the Décarie's trainer, knows Abregu very well.
“Abregu is dangerous offensively like Carl Froch can be, but
for sure, this guy has not the Carl Froch's chin,” said
Ramsay. “He goes on the floor pretty often. Antonin is very
energetic, he has a very solid chin, and he hasnow the
experience and the maturity to perform in the boxing major
leagues. And the pressure will be on the Abregu's shoulders.
He wants so much to impress his fans. It could play against
him. Antonin will need to take advantage of all Abregu's
technical mistakes, and be extremely solid in
counterattacks. Antonin will be the underdog in Buenos
Aires, and I like his chances to cause a huge surprise.”
Yvon Michel, the GYM Group promoter, likes also the chances
that Décarie causes a surprise. “September 29th in Foxwoods,
Connecticut, nobody in USA believed that Antonin could win
against Alex Perez, who showed up in the ring with a perfect
record or 16-0-0. Antonin has finally dominated all the
rounds and he won by TKO in the 6th round. Antonin is going
in Argentina with the serious intention to cause another
surprise. He knows that the winner of this interim
championship bout has the guaranty to be involved in a WBC
championship of the world. No doubt in my mind that Antonin
has now the maturity to take a challenge of this
importance.”
