Stevenson Will Face Bellew Or
Cloud

MONTRÉAL - The WBC championship committee asked to the
Montréaler Adonis Stevenson, the new WBC light heavyweight
champion of the world, to face his first contender, the
British Tony Bellew, at his next presence in the ring. On
his side, the promoter Yvon Michel, the boss of the GYM
Group, hopes that
Stevenson will make the first defense of his crown against
the former IBF champion, the American Tavoris Cloud.
Yvon Michel hopes to persuade the WBC to accept a derogation
which allow Stevenson to face Cloud (24-1-0) before Bellew
(20-1-1). The Montréal promoter knows that Cloud is a more
interesting name than Bellew for HBO. Stevenson (21-1-0)
became WBC world champion May 25th at Bell Centre, in
beating
the veteran Chad Dawson (31-3-0) by TKO in the first
round.Cloud, a fighter from Tallahassee, Florida, lost his
IBF crown to Bernard Hopkins (53-6-2) March 9th in Brooklyn
(unanimous decision).
Only hours after his quick win against Dawson, Stevenson has
challenged publicly Hopkins, in hoping to unify the WBC and
IBF crowns, but the IBF championship committee is wishing to
see Hopkins make a first defense of his title before face
Stevenson. In May 2011, Hopkins won the WBC crown in beating
on points the Montrealer Jean Pascal (27-2-1) at Bell Centre
in Montréal, but his lost that title to Dawson last year in
Atlantic City, in losing on points. Stevenson did the
necessary to bring back the 175 pounds WBC crown in
Montréal…
