WBA Elimination Bout For Alvarez

Eleider Alvarez, a Colombian living in Montréal since the
beginning of his pro boxing career, made another step in
direction of an eventual participation to a world
championship fight, in beating Nicholson Poulard, the
brother of Jean Pascal, by TKO in less than three rounds.
With this victory, Alvarez (12-0-0) is now NABA and NABO
light heavyweight North American champion.
Before the fight, Alvarez was ranked 9th contender by the
WBO, Poulard 8th contender by the WBA.
Alvarez has easily dominated the first two rounds wit his
very fast hands. And Alvarez was blocking or avoiding all
the Poulard's power shots.
In the third round, Alvarez floored Poulard (19-4-0) with a
solid right hand. Poulard got back on his feet, but he was
clearly hurt. The referee Marlon B. Wright took the right
decision in stopping the fight, allowing Alvarez a win by
TKO after 2.08 minutes of this third round (this unification
titles bout was
scheduled for 12).
Yvon Michel, the Alvarez promoter, mentioned that his
fighter will be involved in a WBA elimination bout this
year, possibly June 8th, when Adonis Stevenson will face
Chad Dawson. “George Martinez, who is member of the WBA
championship committee, told me that Eleider will be
involved in a WBA elimination bout very soon, possibly at
his next bout,” said Yvon Michel. “The WBA champion, Beibut
Shumenov, has no mandatory challenger since many months. The
WBA is estimating it is the time to organize an elimination
bout in the light heavyweight division. I am expecting to
receive a confirmation for that in the next days.”
THE UNDERCARD
In the opening bout of the evening, the Ontarian Marc
Paggaliwangan (4-0-0), one of the best prospect of the
bantamweight division in Canada, stopped the Dominican Jose
Adan Fernandez (2-1-0) after only one round of action. When
Fernandez came back in his corner after the first round, he
mentioned to
his trainers he got a serious hand injury. His trainers
threw the towel.
The super welterweight Mian Hussain, a very aggressive
fighter from Montréal, posted his 5th win in pro boxing
(5-0-0), in beating the Dominican Basilio Silva by KO at
1.24 minute of the second. Hussain provoked a knockdown at
the beginning of the second round, and won by KO few seconds
after, with a tremendous power shot on the chin.
The super welterweight Sébastien Bouchard, from Baie
Saint-Paul, Québec, improved his record to 5-0-0 with a win
by unanimous decision in four rounds against the Polish Adam
Grabiec (3-7-0).
The heavyweight Hugue Fury, a British, started his pro
boxing career on a good note, in stopping David Whittom
(11-20-1), from Québec, at 1.49 minute of the second round
of a bout scheduled for four. Fury sent Whittom on the floor
in the second round, and few seconds after, the referee
stopped the bout, allowing to the British a win by TKO.
Didier Bence (8-0-0), a heavyweight from Montréal, sent the
American Jonte Willis (9-5-1) on the floor in the third
round, with a great power shot, and he finally won by
unanimous decision in eight rounds.
