Edwin Rodriguez (26-1, 14 KO’s) had no business being in the ring with WBA super middleweight Champ Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KO’s ) on Saturday night. Outside of a fast start Rodriguez was nothing more than target practice for Ward who was landing blinding shots on the slower fighter at a pretty impressive clip. The fight had it’s moments but no one is ever going to mistake this for a fight of the year candidate, heck, it wasn’t even the fight of the night in Ontario.

As one Goossen Tudor team member said, “This was the perfect opponent for Andre to make his comeback with.” I couldn’t agree more. Taking on an over-hyped challenger who is slow to the punch and clumsy of foot is the perfect guy to make your return with. The one positive for Rodriguez is a great set of whiskers. Ward nailed his chin numerous times but Rodriguez would never go down.

Take nothing away from Ward who did what he had to in his return performance. He showed he is a true professional throughout the press tour while Rodriguez will always be looked on as someone who cut some serious corners just to get a payday. There is nothing professional about that.

Throughout the fight Ward stayed in complete control with his hand speed and accurate punches. As with most Ward fights we also got the obligatory holding, head butts and fouls but referee Jack Reiss took care of that when he docked both fighters 2 points midway through the scrap and admonished them for over the top dirty tactics.

There is no way to get around it, when Rodriguez tipped the scales two pounds over the 168 pound limit this fight was cursed. With no title on the line the main event was at best sloppy. If anyone cares final scores read 118-106, 117-107 and 116-108 all in favor of Ward.

Middleweight DonYil Livingston dropped majority decision to Tony Hirsch over 6

In the fight of the night Super featherweight Juan Funez remained undefeated with a unanimous decision win over Carlos Gonzalez. Final scores read 39-37 and 40-36 twice.

Light middleweight Justin DeLoach KO'd Robert Hill at the 51 second mark of round 3.
