Diaz Given Gift In Los Angeles

Featherweight Joseph Diaz (17-0, 10 KO’s) was the recipient
of a home town victory over Nicaraguan Rene Alvarado
(22-5,15 KO’s). Spin it any way you want, the crowd that
should have been happy with their home town boy winning,
instead booed vehemently when the unanimous victory decision
was declared in favor of Diaz.
After a bogus knockdown by Diaz in round one Alvarado got up
off the deck and for the next nine rounds was the aggressor
and never took a backward step. Meanwhile Diaz looked gassed
out and perplexed most of the night and outside of a few big
shots that landed Jo Jo did little if anything to stop the
charging Alvarado.
To top off the undeserved victory by Diaz the judges
scorecards once again lead a sane person to believe that
something rotten was brewing long before the contest took
place. 98-91 in favor of Diaz? Crazy! 96-93 was also a tad
askew with only the score of 95-94 being acceptable at best.
99.9 % of the media expressed the same views after the
fight.
After the fight Diaz said, “I felt great. I knew Alvarado
was going to bring it and we fought ten hard rounds. But, I
landed the bigger shots, the harder shots, and that made the
difference.”
Alvarado simply stated, "I think it was an exciting fight, a
fight for the people. I was his first big test and he did a
good job. But, I feel that I dominated the fight and the win
should have been mine. This fight should have been for
Nicaragua. "It wasn’t a knockdown. I tripped. I wasn’t hurt.
This fight should have been mine."
