Fonfara Stops Chavez Jr.,
Wins WBC International Title

In a fan filled venue for boxing from the sports complex at
the Stub-Hub Center in Carson, CA brought tonight’s exciting
matches. In the light heavy weight main event it was Julio
Cesar Chavez, Jr. of Culiacan, Mexico taking on Andrzej
Fonfara of Radom, Poland. The co-main event featured Amir
Imam of Davie, Florida versus Walter Castillo of Managua,
Nicaragua.
Polish Andrzej Fonfara wins via KO at the end of round 9 and
is now the WBC International Light Heavyweight champion
improving to 27 – 3, (16 KO’s). At the 00:56 second mark in
round 9 Fonfara connected a vicious left hook to the temple
of Chavez, Jr. cementing his legs in which for the first time
of his boxing career hit the canvas.
Following the knockdown and surviving the 8 count in the
remaining seconds of the 9th round Chavez, Jr displayed
courage to move passed the knockdown by retaliating with an
offensive punching attack to close the round. It is in
between the round when the referee waves the bout at the
direction of Chavez’s corner.
Through the match Fonfara demonstrated he was be stronger
light heavyweight boxer by naturally connecting the harder
punches with ease. Though, Chavez Jr. made every attempt to
work the body to set up the big punch he was unsuccessful.
At no point through the match did Fonfara appear to be
affected by Chavez Jr.’s fight plan as he counter punched
connecting plenty short upper-cuts and hooks landing at a
higher percentage.
Thus, by the conclusion of the 9th round it was clear
Fonfara was in control of the bout by maintaining a tight
defensive guard that Chavez Jr. had difficulty penetrating or
landing the big punch he was seeking. By this point in the
match Fonfara had pounded Chavez Jr; causing him to appear
fatigued and weakened him unable to maintain appropriate
balance resulting in his corner requesting stoppage of the
bout.
In the co-main event super lightweight bout after 10 rounds
of an entertaining boxing match it went to the score cards;
99 – 91, 100 – 90, 98 – 92, all 3 in favor for the winner
and still undefeated Amir Imam improving to 17 - 0.
To win the bout Amir Imam boxed Walter Castillo in similar
style, though not in perfection, to that of Floyd May…
utilizing shoulder- roll defense, pot-shot punches, and
elusive footwork through the ring.
Despite the Amir’s fighting style the hard punching Walter
Castillo continued an-in your face offensive attack landing
punches that snapped Iman’s head back. Walter C. would begin
each round aggressively and towards the end of the round he
would wear down slightly as Amir I. capitalized by closing
the rounds in fashion connecting combination punches.
Utilization this fight method for Amir in his match tonight
resulted in his key to victory.
In the welterweight bout Fabian Maidana of Santa Fe,
Argentina wins in the second round via stoppage at the
directions of his opponent’s corner, Cory Vom Baur of
Vancouver, WA.
Awarded the WBA Interim Bantamweight Champion in a split
decision win was Moises Flores of Guadalajara, Mexico over
opponent Oscar Escandon of Tolima, Colombia. In an intense
bout that went the distance -12 rounds, Moises F. maintained
his poise to come out victorious by being the busier puncher
through the rounds connecting effective combinations.
The middleweight bout went the distance of 8 rounds as
Omar Chavez of Culiacan, Mexico is awarded the win improving
his record to 33-3-1 against opponent Richard Gutierrez of Arjona, Colombia.
