IBF Requiring Beterbiev vs. Hopkins

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The IBF championship committee sent a letter to the GYM Group requiring a fight between Montrealer Artur Beterbiev and American Bernard Hopkins for the number one contender position in the light heavyweight division.

Kathy Duva, the promoter of the WBA, WBO and IBF light heavyweight champion of the world, the Russian Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1), was negotiating with promoter Yvon Michel, the boss of the GYM group, for a fight between Beterbiev (9-0-0) and Kovalev (27-0-1) for November 28th in Moscow, Russia.

The decision of IBF should logically block Duva’s project. Duva mentioned her strong desire to organize a fight between Beterbiev and Kovalev a few hours after Kovalev beat the French Nadjib Mohammedi (37-4-0) by TKO in less than three rounds, July 25th at the Mandalay Bay Arena in Las Vegas.

Apparently, the IBF championship committee is ready to hold a purse bid for Beterbiev vs. Hopkins.
