  Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Kovalev vs. Pascal Rematch To Be
Announced For January 30 In Montreal

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The InterBox Group, managed by the promoter Jean Bédard, will confirm very soon that a rematch between the Montrealer Jean Pascal and the Russian Sergey Kovalev will be presented January 30th at Bell Centre in Montréal. Apparently, Bédard and Kathy Duva, the promoter of Main Event, finalized a deal during the week-end to organize this rematch.

March 14th in Montréal, Kovalev (28-0-1) made a successful first defense of his IBF, WBA and WBO light heavyweight championship of the world, in beating Pascal (30-3-1) by TKO in the eighth round. It was the first time that Pascal lost before a fight’s limit.

Kovalev is ranked now among the 10 best fighters pound for pound in the world. At his last fight, July 25th at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino in Las Vegas, Kovalev made a successful second defence of his triple crown, with a win by TKO in less than three rounds against his IBF mandatory challenger, the French Nadjib Mohammedi (37-4-0).

Just before the Kovalev-Mohammedi bout, in Las Vegas, Pascal got a controversial win by unanimous decision in 10 rounds against the Cuban Yanieski Gonzalez (16-1-0).
