  Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Lafreniere Hopes To Get His Chance
In North American Championship

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The former boxers Howard and Otis Grant, two Montrealers, will present a pro boxing show Friday evening at the Olympia Theatre in Montréal downtown. The main event will involved the middleweight Francis Lafrenière (7-5-2), a boxer from a West island's suburb of Montréal, Côteau-Du-Lac. Lafrenière will face Mohammed Akrong (20-8-0), from Ghana, in a eight rounder.

“Akrong seems to be in perfect shape, I am expecting an intense fight, said Lafrenière. I know he has the reputation to be very tough. And he has more experience than me. He fought international fighters like Marco Antonio Rubio, Schiller Hyppolite and Renan St-Juste. I need to get a good performance and a win to prove I can fight in a higher level in the middleweight division. I am planning to defend my Canadian middleweight title next summer, and I hope, after, to get my chance in a North American championship.”

The others bouts of the evening will involved the super bantamweight Tyson Cave (24-3-0), from Halifax, Nova Scotia; the heavyweights Dillon Carmen (7-2-0), from Toronto, and Éric Martel (10-5-0), from Québec City; the light heavyweight Erik Bazinyan (7-0-0), from Montréal, the super featherweight Golden Garcia (2-0-0), also from Montréal, and the two local rookies Dwayne Durel and Kyle Marsh.

Cave will fight the Mexican Abraham Gomez (19-9-1); Carmen will face also a Mexican, Benito Quiroz (11-2-0); Martel will be opposed to the Montrealer Samer Barakat (4-0-0); Bazinyan will meet the French Morgan Le Gal (11-2-1); Garcia will challenge Jesse MacMillan (0-1-0), from Halifax, and finally, Durel, a lightweight from Montréal, and Marsh, a boxer from Toronto, will both make their pro debut.

The fights Cave-Gomez and Carmen-Quiroz are scheduled for eight rounds, the bouts Martel-Barakat and Bazinyan-LeGal are six rounders, and the fights Garcia-MacMillan and Durel-Marsh are four rounders.

At the weigh in, Lafrenière posted an official weight of 158.8 pounds, Akrong 156.6, Cave 134, Gomez 138.5, Carmen 233, Quiroz 227,, Bazinyan 168.2, Le Gal 167, Martel 259, Barakat 206, Garcia 129.8, MacMillan 128.6, Durel 134 and finally, Marsh 133.
