Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Kevin Bizier: "I Will Be Very
Aggressive
Like I Was Against Lawson"
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The Canadian fighter Kevin Bizier will dispute in
few days the most important bout of his career. A fighter
from Québec City, Bizier (25-2-0) will try to dethrone the
British Kell Brook (35-0-0) as IBF welterweight champion of
the world at the Sheffield Arena in England. He flew from
Montréal to England Sunday.
A hell of of a challenge is waiting him! For several
international boxing writers, Brook deserves a place among
the best fighters pound for pound in the world.
“When i was a teenager, I was dreaming constantly to the day
I would become world champion in pro boxing, said Bizier.
Specially the night that my idol, Arturo Gatti, became IBF
super lightweight champion of the world. It was in 1995.
That night, I mentioned to my parents that I was dreaming to
do what Arturo did. I will have my chance in few days. I
know it will be tough fight. Kell Brook is a dangerous
fighter. But I really believe I can surprise him with the
perfect strategy. Brook is a specialist of the
counter-attack, and I am a specialist of the attack. Then, I
will need to be very aggressive in every rounds like I was
when I won my elimination bout against the African Frederick
Lawson.”
Last November at the Miccosukee Indian Resort in Miami,
Bizier won an IBF elimination bout in beating Lawson
(24-1-0) by TKO in the 10th round.
“I became the first fighter to beat Lawson with the perfect
strategy, said Bizier. I was attacking constantly, in giving
a lot of power shots to the body. I will work the same way
against Brook. If a fighter let Brook moves constantly in
the ring, let him work in counter-attack, he has no chance
to win. I need to force Brook to fight in what we call...
inside boxing. I need to force him to fight in the ropes.
More I will stay close to him, more I will have chances to
hit him solidly with hooks to the body. If I can connect him
with a lot of solid body hooks to the body, I will certainly
increase my chances to win the bout. However, I will need to
protect my chin from the first to the last second of the
fight. Brook hit hard, and he loves to place solid
uppercuts. Its certainly not by accident that he won 24
bouts by KO or TKO. If I stay close to him, I guess he will
try to catch me with uppercuts, but I will know how to react
against his uppercuts. If will be crucial to fight with a
perfect concentration. You cannot afford to make mistakes
against a fighter of this caliber.”
Bizier said he is not intimidated at all to face Brook in
his town, in Sheffield. “I am the underdog, and I am
fighting in a foreign country, said Bizier. Then, the
pressure won’t be on my shoulders, but on the Brook’s
shoulders. I am going in the ring to surprise him, then, it
will be fun. Him will go in the ring to try to impress his
fans and prove them he is deserving to have the world
champion statute. The pressure will definitively be on his
shoulders…”
In December 2014 at the Québec City Colisée, Bizier lost by
split decision against the Montrealer Romanian Jo Jo Dan
(35-3-0) in an IBF elimination bout. In March 2015, Dan went
in England to fight Brook, and he lost by TKO in the fourth
round.
“Like Brook, Dan loves to counter-attack, and his style cost
him a defeat in England, said Bizier. No doubt in my mind,
my style is more appropriate to fight a boxer like Brook.
Like I said, you cannot be patient against Brook, you need
to attack him constantly.”
Bernard Barré, the scout of the GYM Group in Montréal, the
man who recruited Bizier for the organization in 2008,
believes that Bizier can cause a surprise in Sheffield.
“If Brook believes he will have a easy bout, he will be
surprised, said Barré. No boxer in Canada has a better hook
to the body than Kevin Bizier. I am sure that Kevin will
chase Brook in every rounds to connect him with power shots
to the head and the body. Kevin will need to attack like
hell to surprise Brook. No doubt, Brook is not an easy
opponent. He is a good mover in the ring, he is fast and he
can punch solidly. But, obviously, I am crossing my fingers
in hoping that Kevin will surprise Brook and dethrone him as
IBF welterweight champion of the world. We have a good world
champion of the world in our organization, Adonis Stevenson,
but our organization needs a second one. I will certainly be
nervous in watching that bout Saturday evening.”
