Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Bute, Alvarez & Beterbiev Could
Fight In Quebec City April 2
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - Lucian Bute, the former IBF super middleweight
champion of the world, Artur Beterbiev and Eleider Alvarez,
could fight April 2nd at the Vidéotron Centre in Québec
City. The promoter of the GYM Group, Yvon Michel, as
reserved this date at the Vidéotron Centre.
However, before confirmed this boxing show, Yvon Michel got
to have the OK from Al Haymon about the opponents chosen for
these three Montrealers. Haymon is the negotiator-manager
for Bute, Alvarez and Beterbiev.
Apparently, Yvon Michel has the intention to organize a bout
between Bute (32-3-0) and the former middleweight (168
pounds) and light heavyweight (175 pounds) champion of the
world, Bernand Hopkins (55-7-2), a veteran from
Philadelphia.
Yvon Michel is trying very hard to finalize a deal with
Kathy Duva, the Sergey Kovalev’s manager, to organize a WBA,
WBO, WBC and IBF light heavyweight unification world titles
bout between Kovalev (28-0-1) and Adonis Stevenson (27-1-0),
a mega fight scheduled for June in Montréal, New York or Las
Vegas.
But if the negotiations with the promoter of Main Event
failed for a fight Kovalev-Stevenson, Yvon Michel could try
to organize a doubleheader for April 2nd in Québec City:
Bute against Hopkins and Stevenson against Alvarez.
Alvarez (19-0-0), a Montrealer Colombian, is the mandatory
challenger for Stevenson, who is detaining the WBC light
heavyweight championship of the world.
A mega fight Kovalev-Stevenson is complicated to organize,
considering Kovalev is on contract with HBO and Stevenson
with Showtime.
Beterbiev (9-0-0) should make a comeback in action April
2nd. Ranked second contender by the IBF and the WBO in the
light heavyweight division, third by the WBA and sixth by
the WBC, Beterbiev did not fight since June because a right
shoulder injury necessitating a minor surgery.
Yvon Michel will confirm in the next two or three weeks if
we will have a mega fight Kovalev-Stevenson in June or a
match up Stevenson-Alvarez in April.
