Bute Tests Positive For The B Test

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - The former IBF super middleweight champion of the world, the Montrealer Romanian Lucian Bute, tested positive for the B test imposed by the WBC and the Washington Athletic Commission.

April 30th in Washington, after his draw against the WBC super middleweight champion of the world, the Swedish Badou Jack, Bute has been forced to past a drug test.

He tested positive for the A test, for using a kind of steroid called astatine, but the GYM Group wanted to wait the result of the B test, in case that the A test was incorrect. In California Thursday evening, the GYM Group got the result of the B test from a laboratory.

Positive again.

Bute (32-3-1) is facing a suspension, but he got to decide if he will accept the suspension or take his retirement from boxing.

The WBC championship committee will inform the GYM Group of his decision in this file.

“I did not take anything illegal intentionally, said Bute. I said it and I am maintaining it. I took a special vitamin the day of the fight, and I got to conclude that this vitamin contained astatine. It was clearly a contamination case. I will talk to my layer in Los Angeles to see if we can suit the pharmacy who sold us this vitamin. The situation is so frustrating. I never took drug in my boxing career, in the amateurs like in the pros. No doubt in my mind I am not responsible for this problem.”

If Bute received a long suspension, he will probably abandoned his boxing career, but he will discuss of the situation with the GYM Group authorities in the weeks to come. Bute is 36 years old.

“It’s a disappointing result, but we will see what will happen in the weeks to come, said the promoter of the GYM Group, Yvon Michel. We will try everything possible to convince the WBC that Lucian does not deserve a suspension in the circumstances. Never before in his boxing career Lucian has been tested positive for a drug test. I believe him when he is saying he did not know that the vitamin he took the day of the fight was containing astatine. I believe also it was a vitamin contaminated.”

Bute won 10 IBF world championships bouts in a row between 2007 to 2012, but he did not win his last three world championships fights opposing him to the British Carl Froch (33-2-0) (TKO in less than five rounds), James De Gale (23-1-0) (unanimous decision), another British, and Badou Jack (20-1-2) (majority draw).
