Some fighters will tell you they are great. Other fighters
will dare to be great and prove it. That is exactly what
Roman Gonzalez (46-0, 38 KO’s) did tonight as he stepped up
to take the WBC World super flyweight title from dethroned
Carlos Cuadras (35-1-1, 27 KO’s). In front of a crowd of
6,714 electric fans both Chocolatito and Cuadras put on a
fantastic show that won’t soon be forgotten.
From the opening bell it was fists of fury from these little
warriors. The action was intense as each man tested the
other with rapid fire combinations. Though they both
possessed great skill and passion it appeared that Gonzalez
was on a mission and was doing enough to capture many of the
early rounds.
Cuadras seemed to come on strong in the mid rounds and was
so excited about the handiwork he was doing he started high
stepping in the ring showing he felt he was taking over
the show. But a controlled fighter like Gonzalez kept his
cool and surveyed the landscape looking for openings to
capitalize on.
By the championship rounds both men showed the marks of a
world class battle. Gonzalez right eye was slowly closing
while Cuadras dripped blood from his wounds. Like the true
champions they are both men fought every second of the final
rounds and almost brought the house down in doing so.
The final bell rang leaving this one up to the judges.
Scores read 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113 all in favor of
Gonzalez. The little man from Nicaragua accomplished his
goal and won his fourth world title. Meanwhile Cuadras has
nothing to be ashamed of; he put on a great performance in
his failed attempt to retain his title. This is one that has
all the makings for a rematch. Let’s see if that plays out
soon.
