Amir Khan: "My Speed & Technique Will Make The Difference In The Result Of This Fight With Canelo"

By Daniel Cloutier

LAS VEGAS - At just a few days before his fight with the WBC middleweight champion of the world, the Mexican Saul Canelo Alvarez, the British Amir Khan is persuaded that his speed will make him the winner of this bout.

Clearly, Khan is not affected by the fact that he is the underdog in that world championship bout. “I am positive that my speed is a crucial weapon for a fight with Alvarez, said Khan. No doubt that my fists are a lot of faster than the Alvarez’s fists. I will certainly be able to dominate the majority of the rounds with my technique and speed.”

Khan saw the fight between Floyd Mayweather Junior (49-0-0) and Alvarez disputed September 14th 2013 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. That night, Alvarez suffered of his only lost in pro boxing. Mayweather beat him by majority decision of the judges in 12 rounds, to win the WBA super welterweight (154 pounds) championship of the world.

“I saw the bout, I agree to say that Mayweather won the bout, but no doubt in my mind, Alvarez is a better fighter since his first lost in pro boxing, said Khan. Alvarez is very strong physically, but I am too. And I am sure I am faster than him, and i am better than him technically. My speed and technique will make the difference in the result of the bout. And don’t forget that at 160 pounds, I am stronger physically than I was when I was fighting in the welterweight division (147 pounds) and the super lightweight division (140 pounds). And I am positive I will be able to take the Alvarez’s power punches. Obviously, to win the bout, I will have to use my natural skills and not to to try to exchange punch for punch with him. I will need to fight intelligently and strategically. But I can tell you that my team has a good fight's plan. I am more than confident to win this fight, and I know that a victory over Alvarez will make me an international boxing star. I guess you understand why I am so motivate by this challenge. I really want to become one of the best fighters pound for pound in the world, and a win over Alvarez will certainly help me to to be ranked among the best fighters pound for pound. It’s certainly the most significant bout of my pro boxing, and I am perfectly prepared mentally, technically and strategically for this challenge.”

Khan (31-3-0) said the pressure will be on the Alvarez’s shoulders. “Alvarez knows he is established favourite to win, then, the pressure will more on his shoulders than on mine, said Khan. I am sure it will be a very exciting evening for me, because a lot of boxing writers and boxing fans believe it’s an impossible mission for me. Name me a fighter who does not like to cause a huge surprise! My fans will watch me when the fight will start, then, you can imagine at what point my motivation to win will be high. More the big moment is close, more I am enthusiastic.”

Virgil Hunter, the Amir Khan’s trainer, has the conviction his fighter will cause a surprise Saturday evening at the T-Mobile Arena. “A lot of boxing fans will be surprised to see that Amir has not lost his natural speed at 160 pounds, said Hunter. I am working with him on a daily basis in the gym, and trust me, Amir has the weapons to cause a huge surprise Saturday evening. And more a fight is significant, more Amir is able to perform. He is so determinate and motivated to beat Alvarez and get an international recognition. Khan is one of the best fighter pound for pound in the world, and he gonna prove it Saturday evening.”
