Marc Ramsay: "De La Rosa Has
A Style Like Fernando Guerrero"

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL— The David Lemieux’s trainer, Marc Ramsay, said his fighter trained very seriously since two months, and he is taking his next opponent very seriously. Ranked six contender by the WBC in the middleweight division, and eight by the IBF, Lemieux (34-3-0) will face the Californian Jaime De la Rosa (23-3-0) in a 12 rounds bout March 12th at the Olympia Theatre in the downtown of Montréal.

The fight Lemieux-De La Rosa will be the main event of this boxing show organized by the promoter Camille Estephan, the big boss of the Eye Of The Tiger Management Group in Montréal.

“No doubt, David trained very seriously in the last two months, and I know he is taking De La Rosa very seriously, said Ramsay. I am more than confident to see David win, but he will have to fight well technically and strategically in each round against this opponent. David got to impose his style and show he is the master of the ring. I know he can do it and will do it. David is strong mentally and physically, then, he will fight like a real warrior when the first bell will ring. I hope for De La Rosa that he is ready for this challenge…”

Ramsay is seeing similarity between De La Rosa and the Dominican Fernando Guerrero (26-3-0). “De La Rosa is a right-hander, but he is fighting like Fernando Guerrero, said Ramsay. He is good technically. But David also is good technically, especially since four years. It’s incredible how much David worked hard to improve his technique.”

A southpaw, Guerrero lost by KO in the third round against Lemieux in May 2014 at the Bell Centre in Montréal. Bernard Barré, the scout of the GYM Group, said De La Rosa has not the chin to resist 12 rounds to the Lemieux’s power shots.

“David is a terrific puncher, and as you know, there are not a lot of fighters able to take many of his power punches, said Ramsay. If David connected solidly De La Rosa in each round, his chances to win before the limit of the 12 rounds will be good. You know David, you know how much he loves to attack and hit solidly. However, De La Rosa has been able to take all the Alfredo Anguillo power shots in September 2014, and Anguillo is also a solid puncher. Then, David will need to attack intensifly in every rounds of the bout.”

Lemieux mentioned us that he wants absolutely to become back world champion this year or next year. May 20th 2015 at Bell Centre in Montréal, Lemieux became IBF middleweight champion of the world in beating the French African Hassan N’dam N’jikam (34-2-0) by unanimous decision. But last October at Madison Square Garden in New York, Lemieux lost by TKO in the eighth round against Gennady Golovkin (34-0-0) in an unification world titles (IBF and WBA) bout. A fighter from Kazakstan, Golovkin is considered by several boxing writers as the actual best boxers pound for pound in the world.

“I really believe David will become back world champion, said Ramsay. He has the talent and the determination to become back world champion. And he has now the experience to fight in majors fights on the international scene. You cannot judge David on his performance against Golovkin. We all know David can do 10 times more in the ring.”

De La Rosa said that the Lemieux’s power punches cannot intimate him. “I know that Lemieux is strong physically, I know he his hitting hard, but I faced a lot of solid punchers in my career, and never I have been intimidate, said De La Rosa. I still believe my technique and my speed will make the difference in the result of this bout. If Lemieux believes that beat me it’s just a formality, he will have the surprise of his career in few days. If he thinks seriously he can knock me out, he is not realistic. I got a perfect preparation for this fight, and no doubt Il will have the energy necessary to dominate the bout and surprise the Lemieux’s fans.”
