Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Stevenson vs. Fonfara Rematch
Could Happen In May Or June
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The promoter of the GYM Group in Montréal, Yvon
Michel, said that a rematch between the WBC light
heavyweight champion of the world, the Montrealer Adonis
Stevenson, and the American Polish Andrzej Fonfara, could
happen in May or June.
Fonfara (28-3-1) won 16 of his last 17 bouts. His only lost
in this sequence, happened against Stevenson (27-1-0) at
Bell Centre in Montréal in May 2014. Stevenson (28-1-0) won
by unanimous decision, but the fight was extremely intense
and spectacular.
If this rematch happens in May, in will be at Bell Centre or
at the Vidéotron Centre in Québec City. If the fight is in
June, it should be at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Yvon
Michel is waiting to know at which date Showtime wants to
televise the bout.
Fonfara increased substantially his credibility on the
international scene at his last two bouts. He beat the
Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1) and the British
Nathan Cleverly (29-2-0), the first one by TKO in the nine
round at Carson City in California, the second one by
unanimous decision in Chicago, where Fonfara is living.
Fonfara is ranked second contender by the WBC, the WBA and
the WBO in the 175 pounds division, and fifth by the IBF.
