The WBC Could Organize A Middleweight Tournament Involving Lemieux, Heiland, Khytrov & Stevens

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL — The WBC championship committee could organize a middleweight tournament in 2017 involving the first four contenders. The winner of this tournament would face the WBC middleweight champion of the world, Gennady Golovkin (36-0-0), who is considered as the second or third best fighter pound for pound in the world.

This tournament would involve the Montrealer David Lemieux (36-3-0), the Argentinian Jorge Sebastian Heiland (28-4-2), the Ukrainian Ievgen Khytrov (14-0-0) and the American Curtis Stevens (29-5-0).

“If this tournament is official, we would love to organize a bout between David and Helland", said Lemieux’s manager, the Montrealer promoter-manager Camille Estephan. "We will see what the WBC championship committee will decide in the next days about this project.”

Lemieux’s promoter is the Californian Oscar De La Hoya, a former world champion who is the owner of the Golden Boy Promotions organization. Sports betting tips could easily see Lemieux as a favorite.

Golovkin will face the New Yorker Daniel Jacobs (32-1-0) in a WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight championships of the world March 18th at Madison Square Garden in New York.
