Saturday night in Layton, UT, Jesse “Wildman” West (6-1, 4
KO’s) continued his winning ways with a second round
knockout victory over the debuting Jamal Barefield.
Barefield came out trying to use his five inch height
advantage, nevertheless, it quickly became apparent that he
had no solution to the pressure from West.
With less than a
minute left in the first round, West rocked Barefield with a
left hook that clearly hurt Barefield. West let his foe off
the hook and the round ended. The start of the second round
and Barefield still looked to have difficulty with the
confident West.
Jesse was all business and ended it at 1:48
of the round after landing a couple left hooks that put Barefield down for the count. With the win Jesse won his
third straight by KO and told this reporter that he is
looking for bigger opportunities.
In the semi-main event, Ingacio Chairez (3-0, 3 KO’s)
defeated Gabriel Pelayo (0-3) in the first round. Chairez
came out with a relentless body attack landing several left
hooks to the body. Pelayo took the first few well, however,
took one to the liver and went to his knees.
Pelayo tried
several times to get back up, but would sink back to his
knees as the referee counted to ten. The win was Chairez’
third first round knockout in as many fights. Time was not
announced.
In a rematch of a fight last year, George Vigil (3-0, 1 KO)
repeated his victory over Patrick Reeves (0-2) put on a
brilliant display of boxing against the veteran MMA fighter
in Reeves. Vigil won a decision 40-36 on all cards. Also on
the undercard David Santos (4-2, 2 KO’s) stopped Mike
Crisman (0-1) early in the third round. Santos used his
height and size advantage to win the one-sided fight. In the
second bout of the evening, returning Rich Power (16-2) and
Brandon Spencer (4-13-1) broke through the ring ropes from
the turnbuckles and landed on the concrete. Power hit his
head and was momentarily knocked out on top of Spencer. The
fight was declared a No Contest and Power was taken to the
hospital. In the opening fight, Cashton Young (1-0) overcame
a second round knockdown to win a decision over Randy
McCarty (1-0-1) by decision.
The card was the first fight card at the Davis Conference
Center since 2013 and the debut of Corner 2 Corner
Entertainment ran by boxing veteran Eddie Cordova. Cordova
is looking to return in April with a card featuring prospect
Jose Haro’s return.
