Sugar Hill: "Williams Is The Most Dangerous Puncher Adonis Faced So Far, But My Fighter Will Win By KO"

By Daniel Cloutier

QUÉBEC CIY, Canada - The Adonis Stevenson’s trainer, Sugar Hill, from the Kronk Gym in Detroit, is really impressed by the technique improvements realized by his fighter. “Few year ago, Adonis was more a puncher than a boxer, but now, he is a very complete fighter, said Hill Tuesday at the hotel Château Bonne Entente in Québec City. Adonis still a destructive puncher and he is fighting now very well technically and strategically. Adonis is working like hell in the gym to improve constantly his technique. He showed the results in his last fights, I guess you agree with me. His last opponents would all tell you that Adonis is difficult to hit solidly now.”

Hill believes his fighter will win by KO next Saturday in the ring of the Videotron Centre in Québec City. Stevenson (27-1-0) will proceed to the seventh defence of his WBC light heavyweight championship of the world, when he will face his mandatory challenger, Thomas Williams Jr. (20-1-0), from Fort Washington, Maryland.

Hill was surprised when Williams said that Stevenson was slow, so and so technically, with a fragile jaw. “Williams is not realistic if he believes seriously that Adonis has a fragile chin, said Hill. And how can he believes seriously that Adonis is slow and bad technically. Adonis is very solid when a fight is violent, and he is better than ever technically. And Adonis moves extremely well in the ring now. His movements are superbly synchronized and he has a good balance on his legs. And Adonis is more energetic than ever in the ring. If Williams thinks he will have an easy game next Saturday, he will have the surprise of his life. I really believe Adonis gonna win this fight by KO. He has the skills, the power and the determination to do it. However, Adonis knows he got to take Williams very seriously. Williams is certainly the most dangerous puncher Adonis faced since he has the statute of WBC champion of the world. In this bout, for Adonis, the good work in defense will important like the good work in attack. And I am absolutely sure Adonis is agree with me.”

On his side, Yvon Michel, the promoter of the GYM Group, believes that Adonis Stevenson will be involved in a very dangerous bout. “Adonis will defend his world title for the seventh time, and I really think it is the most dangerous defense of his title, said Yvon Michel. Williams is a solid puncher, he is a southpaw like Adonis, and he has nothing to lose in that bout. Williams can hit hard with both fists and he is not afraid to take risks offensively. My fighter will need to fight with concentration and intensity from the beginning to the end, and work intelligently defensively. However, I really believe Adonis will do the necessary to win the fight. He is so determinate. He wants so much to fight Sergey Kovalev in an unification of the WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF world titles next year, then, he knows he cannot afford to loose his WBC crown. I promised him to do everything possible to organize a fight between him and Kovalev in 2017.”

Stevenson also believes he has a good opponent Saturday evening at the Videotron Centre.“I am positive the bout will intense and spectacular, said Stevenson. We are two explosive punchers. Even if send him on the floor, I believe he will get back on his legs to continue the bout. I got a fantastic training camp, and it was necessary in the circumstances. It’s a big challenge for me, and I am ready for it. Williams caused a huge surprise at his last bout in April in California, when he beat the Dominican Edwin Rodriguez by KO in less than two rounds (a win who made Williams WBC mandatory challenger), and I know he will try everything possible to cause another huge surprise in Québec City. I needed to be perfectly prepared mentally, physically, technically and strategically for this bout, and I am. You will see, I am ready for everything Williams can bring to the table. Like I said, I am determinate to take advantage of all the technical mistakes Williams will commit, and i know he is compromising constantly his defence to be effective offensively.”

Stevenson got a big smile when he heard Sugar Hill predicted his win by KO. “Williams will certainly try to knock me out, but only one fighter got a very strong chance to win by KO in our bout… and it’s me”, said the Montrealer.

The final press conference for the main event was scheduled for Tuesday morning, but this press conference has been postponed for Wednesday. Why? Williams was supposed to arrive in Québec City Monday, but his flight has been cancelled at the last minute. Williams got a reservation on a airplane which got a mechanic problem at the Baltimore international airport.

“Williams was clearly frustrated when his flight for Québec City has been cancelled, but we will give him a big and nice welcome when he will show up at the Québec international airport”, said the PR of the GYM Group, Vincent Morin, Monday evening.
