Super Featherweight Roger Gutierrez (15-1-1, 12 KO’s)
made too long of a trip from Venezuela just to get his
head handed to him by Rene Alvarado (26- 8, 18 KO’s).
But that’s exactly what happened to “The Kid” Gutierrez
as he was unceremoniously beaten from one side of the
ring to the other by the seasoned “Gemelo” Alvarado.
Sporting and undefeated record with a dozen KO’s
Gutierrez was the A-side and possibly odds on favorite,
but Alvarado, who is seen as a spoiler, would have none
of that. As the fight ensued it was clear Alvarado was
on a mission.
At times it appeared Alvarado was toying with the young
fighter. Truth be told, this was a hands down schooling
for the fighter from Venezuela. It’s a lesson he won’t
soon forget.
For Alvarado, this victory is strong rehabilitation for
his career after his unimpressive loss to Yuriokas
Gamboa last year. For Gutierrez it’s a long way back to
Maracaibo and there is no telling if we will ever see
him again in North America after the humiliating beat
down.
For the record the fight was brought to a halt at the
1:34 mark of round 7.
Featherweight Edgar Valerio (11-0, 6 KO’s) stepped up
tonight as he took on the battle tested Jairo Ochoa
(18-12, 9 KO’s) in a tough as nails eight round contest.
Ochoa went down at the end of round one and both
fighters hit the deck in round two.
From that point on it was a determined Valerio who
proved he had the stuff to play with the big boys as he
took the best the warrior Ochoa could serve up. This
battle will go a long way for Valerio as he can take
what he learned tonight and apply it as he faces bigger
challenges in the future.
Final scores all in favor of Valerio read 80-71 twice
and 79-72.
Bantamweights Joshua Franco (12- 0, 6 KO’s) and Antonio
Rodriguez (11-17-1, 5 KO’s) entertained the crowd with a
free swinging six round affair. Both men pressed the
fight and the action was nonstop as well as hard
hitting.
Franco did a great job against a fighter with twice the
ring experience in Rodriguez. In the end the judges’
scorecards read in favor of Franco 60-54 across the
board.
Super Welterweight Meiirim Nursultanov (3-0, 2 KO)
opened the night by demolishing Lanny Dardar (5-8-2, 3
KO’s) in quick fashion.
After witnessing one of the all-time slowest overhand
rights ever to come out of Bayou Country, Nursultanov
unleashed a flurry of punches that left Dardar on his
hands and knees while shaking his head in surrender.
The KO was registered at the 1:47 mark of round one.
Super Lightweight Cristobal Ortiz (2-0, 1 KO) took on a
long in the tooth and short on inside the ring common
sense Ronald Rodriguez (1-6, 1 KO) in a bout that only
lasted a round and a half.
Ortiz picks up his first KO victory in his young career
in a somewhat unimpressive showing.
