Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Beterbiev vs. Barrera Will Be
Presented April 21 In Miami
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL —The GYM Group confirmed Friday evening that the
IBF light heavyweight elimination bout between the
Montrealer Russian Artur Beterbiev and the Cuban Sullivan
Barrera will be presented April 21st in Miami. Beterbiev
(11-0-0) is actually ranked second contender by the IBF,
Barrera 7th.
The GYM Group will organized the event, because the Montréal
organization won a purse bid February 2nd in New Jersey, at
the IBF head office.
“We will organize the fight in Miami, not only because we
want to give more visibility to Beterbiev on the American
territory, but also because we can expect to draw a big
crowd over there, said the promoter of the GYM Group, Yvon
Michel. As you know, hundred of thousands of Canadians are
passing the winter and the spring in Miami and Fort
Lauderdale. A lot of Canadians are looking for special
events in the South of Florida at this time of the year.
It’s a crucial bout for Artur, who is dreaming to dispute a
world championship. The winner of this elimination fight has
the guaranty to dispute an IBF 175 pounds world championship
in 2017.”
The actual IBF, WBA and WBO light heavyweight champion of
the world, the Californian Andre Ward, will decide soon if
he is taking his retirement or giving a rematch to the
Russian Sergey Kovalev.
Last November, Ward (31-0-0) won a controversial bout by
unanimous decision against Kovalev (30-1-1) in Las Vegas
(most of the boxing writers who were covering the event
picked Kovalev as winner).
If Ward decide to ended his boxing career, the winner of the
fight Beterbiev-Barrera will fight later this year for a
vacant IBF world title.
