Cloutier’s Canada Corner
The Gym Group Wants To Sign
Long Term Contract With Zewski
By Daniel Cloutier
TROIS-RIVIÈRES, Québec, Canada - The Canadian welterweight
Mikael Zewski, inactive for one year and a half, will make a
comeback in the ring June 3rd in the ring of Bell Centre in
Montréal. He will face the Argentinian Christian Ariel Lopez
(22-4-1) before the presentation of the two main fights of
the evening.
The main event, a WBC light heavyweight championship of the
world, will oppose the champion, the Montrealer southpaw
Adonis Stevenson (28-1-0) to the American Polish Andrzej
Fonfara (29-4-0), and the semi final of the evening, a WBC
Silver light heavyweight championship, will oppose the
Montrealers Eleider Alvarez (22-0-0), the Stevenson’s
mandatory challenger, and the former WBC light heavyweight
champion of the world, Jean Pascal (31-4-1).
This bout Stevenson-Fonfara will be a rematch. May 24th,
2014, again at Bell Centre, Stevenson won by unanimous
decision, but that night, Fonfara became the first fighter
to avoid a KO or a TKO against Stevenson in a world
championship fight. Stevenson has been involved in eight WBC
175 pounds world championship fights.
“I am extremely happy to be back in home after an
association of five years with Top Rank Inc.,” said Zewski
in a press conference held in Trois-Rivières, a city located
at mid-way between Montréal and Québec City. “My contract
with Top Rank Inc. is expired wince 2016, and it’s perfect.
I did not want to be associated anymore with Top Rank Inc. I
was not happy anymore with this organization. I got too many
fights cancelled. I will fight on the GYM Group boxing show
June 3rd, and I hope to finalize a long term deal with this
organization in the weeks to come.”
Zewski (27-1-0), a fighter from Trois-Rivières, seems very
motivated and enthusiastic by this come back in action.
“Yes, I am training very seriously since many months, and I
will be perfectly prepared for this come back,” said Zewsky.
“As you know, I am only 28 years old, then, I really believe
I will have a brilliant future in boxing. My plan is to
dispute an Inter-Continental championship bout or a North
American championship fight before the end of the year, to
get back my place in the international ratings. I was ranked
four contender by the WBO in the welterweight division in
2016. I want to get my name back in the «Top 15» before the
end of the year, and few months after, in the Top 10. It
would be fantastic to get the chance to dispute a world
championship bout next year.”
Zewski suffered of his only defeat in pro boxing in 2015 in
Las Vegas. He lost by unanimous decision against the Russian
Konstantin Ponomarev.
‘I said to Mikael that he has no reason to be ashamed of his
loss against Ponomarev in Las Vegas”, said Bernard Barré,
the scout of the GYM Group. “Ponomarev has a perfect and an
impressive record of 31-0-0 and he is ranked in the Top five
of the IBF ratings and in the «Top 10» of the WBC ratings.
Ponomarev is certainly one of the greatest fighters on the
planet. I am sure that Zewsky, with his power, skills and
determination, will live great years in pro boxing with us.
He has certainly the talent to become eventually
welterweight champion of the world.”
The promoter of the GYM Group, Yvon Michel, said: “Mikael
will make his debut with us June 3rd, and we will do
everything possible to sign him for long term in the weeks
to come. No doubt in my mind, he will be a great acquisition
for our organization. He got a spectacular boxing career so
far, and like Bernard Barré said it, the best is to come
with him. He is now more mature than ever, and his
experience will be a major factor to help him to win
significant bouts in the months and years to come.”
A his last presence in the ring, October 24th 2015 in Omaha,
Nebraska, Zewski won by KO in the fifth round against Ayi
Bruce (23-14-0), from Albany, New York. “I was intense and
confident when I won my last fight, and I am sure I will be
stronger mentally and physically when I will make my come
back in the ring June 3rd,” said Zewski. “Boxing still a
passion for me, and the boxing fans will see it clearly June
3rd at Bell Centre.”
