Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Lafrenière KO's Garcia In 7
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The IBF middleweight International champion,
Francis Lafrenière, from Côteau-Du-Lac, Québec, improved his
pro record to 14-5-2 Saturday evening in the ring of the
Tohu Theatre in North Side of Montréal, in beating the
Mexican Manuel Garcia (15-13-2) by KO in the seventh round.
Lafrenière has the brothers Howard and Otis Grant as
trainers.
The bout was extremely intense, each fighter was attacking
furiously in each round. However, Lafrenière was clearly
more accurate than his opponent with his power shots.
In the sixth round, Lafrenière hurt seriously his opponent
in the last minute. Garcia had problems to walk back in his
corner.
Lafrenière, who was very energetic, floored twice the
Mexican in the seventh round. After the second knockdown,
Garcia stayed on the floor, and the referee declared him KO.
“No doubt, I was more energetic and more accurate than him,
said Lafrenière en getting out of the ring. I connected him
with most of my power shots, and his power shots were
touching more my elbows and gloves than my face.”
Otis Grant said: “Francis got a great fight, he was very
intense and determinate, and you will see him in important
bouts in 2017, starting February 24th.”
Lafrenière will have his next bout February 24th in Québec
City, the night of the match up Lucian Bute-Eleider Alvarez.
He will be involved in a NABO North American championship.
The Montrealer super lightweight Dwayne Durel stayed
undefeated in six pro bouts (6-0-0), with a win by KO
against the Mexican Isidro Toala (11-6-1). Durel scored the
KO with a great body shot in the first minute of the second
round.
The Montrealer heavyweight Joel Thériault, a southpaw,
obtained his second win in pro boxing (2-0-0) with a win by
unanimous decision in four rounds over the Mexican Jose De
Jesus Vazquez (4-4-0).The fight was not very good
technically, but intense and violent in each round.
The lightweight Golden Garcia, another Montrealer, increased
his record to 8-0-0 with a victory by unanimous decision in
eight rounds over the Mexican Maximino Toala (11-5-0).
Garcia was more accurate than his opponent, but the half of
the rounds were close and violent.
The middleweight Jordan Balmir (3-0-0), from Drummondville,
Québec, beat Roody Rene (1-5-1), from Ottawa, by KO in the
fourth round. Balmir provoked a knockdown in the third round
with a dozen of power punches to the head, and he scored a
KO in the fourth and last round with a great right hand on
the chin.
The lightweight Roody Pierre-Paul, who is living in a
Northern suburb of Montréal, obtained his 13th win in pro
boxing (13-3-1), in beating the Mexican Abraham Gomez
(26-14-1) by unanimous decision in eight rounds.
Pierre-Paul, a southpaw, dominated most of the rounds, but
he faced a very tough opponent.
In the opening bout of the evening, the Montrealer
middleweight Whitney Baille (4-0-0) won by KO in the first
round over the Mexican Arturo Garcia Lujano (7-8-0). After
only 40 seconds of action, Lujano, connected by a solid body
shot, went on the floor, and he needed more than a minute to
get back on his feet.
