Confirmed: Lemieux Will Fight
Saunders For
The WBO World Title On Dec. 16 In Montreal
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - The promoter of The Eye Of The Tiger Management,
the Montrealer businessman Camille Estephan, confirmed that
the Montrealer David Lemieux will fight the British Billy
Joe Saunders in a WBO middleweight championship of the world
December 16th at the Bell Place in Laval, a northern suburb
of Montréal.
Former IBF 160 pounds champion of the world, Lemieux
(38-3-0) lost his title in October 2015 at Madison Square
Garden in New York, against one of best fighters pound for
pound in the world, Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1), a boxer from
Kazakstan. Golovkin won that bout by TKO in the eighth
round.
Since his defeat against Golovkin, Lemieux is undefeated. He
won by KO (4th round) against Glen Tapia (23-4-0), from New
Jersey, by KO (3rd round) against the New Yorker Curtis
Stevens (29-6-0), and by unanimous decision against the
Argentinian Cristian Fabian Rios (21-9-3) and the Mexican
Marcos Reyes (35-5-0).
“David was hoping to get another shot for a world title, and
he will finally get that great opportunity,” said Estephan,
“We finalized a deal with the Saunders team, and we are more
than happy. No doubt, this event will be an important one
for the Montréal boxing fans.”
Saunders has a perfect record: 25-0-0.
September 16th in England, Saunders made a second successful
defense of his WBO title, in beating the New Yorker Willie
Monroe Jr. (21-3-0) by unanimous decision.
Lemieux scored 33 wins by KO or TKO in pro boxing, versus 12
for Saunders.
Betting odds for the next boxing match have yet to post but
Lemieux who is fighting in his home of Quebec will more than
likely be the slight betting favorite over the incumbent
titlist.
