Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Yvon Michel Believes That
Alvarez,
Not Badou Jack, Will Face Stevenson
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL – A few days ago, the Montrealer Colombian Eleider
Alvarez was furious, because his advisors told him that
Adonis Stevenson, the WBC light heavyweight champion of the
world, was more interested to face the WBA 175 pounds
champion of the world, the Swedish African Badou Jack,
(22-1-2) for his next fight.
However, Stevenson (29-1-0) and Alvarez (23-0-0), the
mandatory challenger for the WBC light heavyweight title
since almost two years, were scheduled to fight January 27th
at the Vidéotron Centre in Québec City.
The news has been confirmed by the GYM Group last month. “We
will able to confirm soon the next Stevenson’s bout,” said
Yvon Michel, the promoter or the GYM Group. “The media
mentioned that Stevenson was not interested anymore to fight
Alvarez and he wants to face immediately Badou Jack for the
unification of the WBC and WBA light heavyweight world
titles. I can tell you now that Alvarez has a lot of more
chances than Badou Jack to become the next Stevenson’s
opponent. If Eleider really wants to face Stevenson at his
next fight, and I am sure it’s the case, I will support him
at 100%. As I said, we will be able to confirm the next
Adonis bout in the days or weeks to come. I am expecting to
finalize the file in the days to come.”
Apparently, the fight Stevenson-Alvarez will happen in
February or March in Québec City, instead January 27th, as
required by the network Showtime.
