Marc Ramsay: "Koelling Can’t Hurt Beterbiev,
But Beterbiev Can Hurt Him"

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL — The more the big moment is close, the more the trainer Marc Ramsay believes that his fighter, Artur Beterbiev, will be the next IBF light heavyweight champion of the world. Saturday evening in the ring of the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California, Beterbiev (11-0-0), a Montrealer Russian, will face the German Enrico Koelling (23-1-0) for the vacant IBF 175 pounds world title. Beterbiev is ranked first contender by the IBF, Koelling is second.

“I watched Koelling on videos, then, I know exactly what Artur got to achieve against him,” said Ramsay. “I won’t reveal our specific strategy for this fight, but I am sure that my fighter has the talent, the desire and the determination to win it. Koelling is not a hard puncher, but he is good technically, especially defensively. I know that Koelling can’t hurt Artur, but Artur can hurt him. Artur is always patient in the first round of each fight, but as you know, more the fights is progressing, more he is intense, confident and efficient. I am positive that Artur will be the new IBF light heavyweight champion of the world in few hours. Artur proved all his career he has an incredible talent. He is exceptional technically, offensively like defensively, and anytime in the fight, he can connected a punch extremely painful for the opponent. I guess Koelling believes he will frustrate Artur in fighting well defensively, but trust me, Artur is a master to punish a opponent, each time the rival is committing a technical mistake.”

Koelling has disputed 24 pro bouts, versus 11 for Beterbiev. “Koelling, like Artur, got a long and productive amateur career,” said Ramsay. “In pro boxing, Koelling has had more fights than Artur, but my fighter faced several good opponents in pro boxing, and he won all these bouts by KO or TKO. It’s certainly not by accident that Beterbiev became IBF first contender with only 11 pro bouts of experience.”

Ramsay is more than satisfy by the Beterbiev’s preparation. “Artur is taking the boxing very seriously,” said Ramsay. “He is training every day with intensity and determination, to be sure he will have all his weapons when the fight will start. He has really the mentality of a world champion, and I am sure he will be world champion next Saturday. Artur knows that he will dispute in few hours the most important fight of his career, and he is extremely hungry of success. When you will hear the first bell, she will see in action an Artur Beterbiev perfectly prepared to face this challenge.”

Ramsay believes his fighter will be the next king of the light heavyweight division. “Artur is 32 years old, and he is certainly at his best now,” said Ramsay. “He has the experience and a natural talent. With his determination, Artur should be world champion for several years. Yes, I think he will be the master of the light heavyweight division in the years to come.”

One of the best boxing trainer in Canada, Ramsay is taking care of Beterbiev since the moment he left the amateur boxing to become a pro, in 2013. “It’s a real pleasure to work day after day with a fighter so concentrate on his career,: said Ramsay. “It’s certainly not a coincidence if Artur is involved in a world champion bout with only 11 pro bouts of experience. His progression has been fantastic, in the pro like in the amateurs.”
