Cloutier’s Canada Corner
Stevenson Out Of His Coma
By Daniel Cloutier
MONTRÉAL - Adonis Stevenson’s wife, Simone God, revealed
Sunday morning that his husband is now out of his coma.
December 1st in the ring of the Videotron Centre in Québec
City, Stevenson (29-2-1) lost his WBC light heavyweight
championship of the world, when his mandatory challenger,
the Russian Oleksandr Gvozdyk (16-0-0) beat him by KO in the
11th round. It was the first time that Stevenson lost in a
world title match (before this bout, he won 10 world
championships bouts in a row).
About 30 minutes after this fight, Stevenson collapsed in
his dressing room shower. The promoter of the GYM Group,
Yvon Michel, called immediately an ambulance to transport
Stevenson to the Enfant-Jesus Hospital in Québec City.
Two hours after the fight, Stevenson was in a coma. In
first, the doctors believed it was a concussion, but they
discovered few hours after that it was a cervical
hemorrhage.
After more than three weeks, Stevenson is now able to open
his eyes. But Simone God did not mention if his husband is
able to speak or move his legs. But it’s clear that
Stevenson, a boxer of 41 years old, will be obliged to end
to his pro boxing career.
