Significant Fight Between Alvarez & Seals

By Daniel Cloutier

VERONA, New York - Ranked number nine by the WBC and seventh by the WBO in the light heavyweight division, the Montrealer Colombian Eleider Alvarez will have a very significant fight Saturday evening in the ring of the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York. Alvarez (24-1-0) will face the American Michael Seals (24-2-0), from Georgia State, in a WBC light heavyweight (175 pounds) Continental Americas championship.

“It will be a very intense fight,” said Alvarez this morning at the Turning Stone Hotel. “I saw Seals in action, and I know he is good fighter and he is a dangerous puncher. But I know I have the weapons necessaries to beat him. I am a good puncher myself, and I know I am better technically than him. I will be prepared for a 12 rounds bout, but I will try everything possible to win before the 12th round. I will try to hurt him in each round. It’s a very important fight for my future in boxing. I want to get an other opportunity to fight a world title in 2020, then, it’s crucial to win this bout.”

When we asked him if Seals has a good chin, Alvarez said: “I really don’t know if he has a good chin, but trust me, I will test several times his chin in this fight.”

Alvarez’s trainer, the Montrealer Marc Ramsay, is clearly optimistic for his fighter. “Eleider got a very good preparation, he trained very seriously, and I am expecting from him a great performance Saturday evening, said Ramsay. No matter if the fight goes the limit or finish by a KO or TKO. I am positive that Eleider will be in the winning’s corner. Eleider has great ambitions for 2020, then, he knows he got to win this bout.”

Ramsay saw Seals in action in watching videos. “Seals is like Allan Green (33-6-0),” said Ramsay, “He is a good fighter and he is a powerful puncher. But Eleider knows exactly what to achieve to win this fight. I am sure that my fighter will fight with intensity from the beginning to the end.”

Ramsay also believes that his fighter will dispute a world championship bout in 2020. “Eileider is ready to face Sergey Kovalev (34-4-1) for a third time, and he is ready to face another Russian who is detaining a world title, Dimitry Bivol. Elider has certainly the talent, the determination and the motivation to win against the best light heavyweights in the world.”

In his first fight with Kovalev in August 2018 in Atlantic City, Alvarez won by KO in the seventh round. However, in the rematch disputed in February 2019 in Frisco, Texas, Kovalev won by unanimous decision in 12 rounds. It why that Ramsay thinks that a third fight Alvarez-Kovalev is logical in the circumstances.

Yvon Michel, the promoter of the GYM Group, the man who signed Alvarez in 2009, believes that his fighter will impress the crowd Saturday evening. “Eleider got a perfect preparation and I am expecting that he will impress the crowd Saturday evening,” said Yvon Michel. “It’s a crucial fight for him and I really believe he is gonna win it.”

Bernard Barré, the GYM Group scout, said: “Eleider has a very good technique and I think he will dominate clearly this fight. My prediction? Alvarez going to win by KO or TKO in the last three rounds, Eleider really wants to get another shot for a world title, then, he knows that a win over Seals is a must.”
