By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL — The promoter of the GYM Group in Montréal, Yvon Michel, confirmed that the light heavyweight Eleider Alvarez, a Colombian living in Montréal, will have his next fight August 22nd at the MGM Grand Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas.

Alvarez is ranked third contender by the WBO and fifth by the WBC in the 175 pounds division. Smith, a New Yorker, is ranked fourth contender by the WBO and seventh by the WBC and the IBF. This fight was originally scheduled for June, but Alvarez injured his right shoulder in a training session in Montréal.

“It’s a very important fight, because the two fighters are both in position to get a world championship bout,” mentioned the GYM Group scout, Bernard Barré. “I know that Eleider is perfectly prepared for this challenge, and I am positive that he will deliver a great performance August 22nd. Eleider really hopes to dispute a world championship fight this year or next year.”
