In Unification Title Fight

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL —— WBC and IBF light heavyweight (175 pounds) champion of the world, the Montrealer Russian Artur Betertbiev could fight the New Yorker Joe Smith Jr., the WBO champion of the world, in an unification world titles bout in September at Madison Square Garden in New York. The negotiations between the promoters of the two fighters, Top Rank Inc. and Joe DeGuardia, are not completed, but it seems that this important bout will become reality very soon.

Beterbiev has a perfect pro record (16-0-0) and Smith compiled a record of 27-3-0. At his last bout, March 20th in Moscow, Russia, Beterbiev beat the Russian Adam Reines (19-2-1) by TKO in the 10th round. On his side, Smith won the WBO vacant light heavyweight championship of the world April 10th in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with a win by majority decision of the judges against the Russian Maxim Vlasov (45-4-0).
