Ovsepyan Stops Pimentel
It would be a sweet win for Armen Ovsepyan on Friday night,
as the Armenian-born, Russia based fighter claimed the
California State Super Welterweight Title by halting
Mexico's Jorge Pimentel in the Second round of the Showdown
Promotions / UBM Promoted fight card held at the El Faro
Plaza Center in Vernon, California.
Ovsepyan, the stronger fighter visibly battered Pimentel to
the ground twice in the second round, with the stoppage
coming at :59 seconds into the frame.
With the win, Ovsepyan bounced back from a split decision
loss to former Olympian Ricardo Williams Jr. in his last
bout to move his record to 12-2 with 10KOs.
Suruhan Defeats Reyes via Decision.
Armenia's Super Featherweight Vage Suruhan moved his record
to 3-0 by out hustling, using his speed and fleet of foot to
defeat a high-pressure fighter in a very game Juan Ramon
Reyes, who gave Suruhan, a switch hitter fits through four
action packed rounds.
Suruhan employed his legs, lateral movemen to score the
flashier shots from the outside, cutting Reyes alongside his
right eye in the third round, with the latter returning the
favor and bloodying up Suruhan's mouth in the same round.
At the end of four rounds, Suruhan walked away with a 39-37
(twice) and 40-36 unanimous decision.
East L.A.'s Featherweight Aalan Martinez 10-1-1 (6KOs)
halted a very wild Ronald Rodriguez in three.
The unorthodox, wide punching Rodriguez gave problems to the
southpaw Martinez early on in the fight.
Martinez shortened up his shots, behind a jab to put on a
volley of shots against a tired Rodriguez in the third round
as he layed against the ropes, barely returning a shot back,
the referee opted for stopping the fight at 2:43 of the
third round.
Super Welterweight Alonso Loeza scored the mild upset by
stopping pro debuting Octavio Franco in the third round.
Franco went down twice in the fight, once as he pulled
straight back off balance and again as he was hit hard by a
body shot and assorted uppercuts which put the fighter down,
being counted out by the referee at 1:15 of the third round.
In a very fun Bantamweight bout, shorter, wide punching
Santiago Alonso came close to pulling the upset of the night
by dropping Jesse Villanueva in the first round with
haymakers.
Villanueva gathered his senses and put his combinations
together in the second round, going on to mount the
comeback, dropping Alonso withn the referee stopping the
fight as the latter was clearly outmatched and outclassed in
the two round war.
In the opening bout of the evening, tall Lightweight Roberto
Rios won his third fight by winning an inside battle against
a tough Cesar Garcia via decision.
