Next Canelo Alvarez Opponent

By Daniel Cloutier

MONTRÉAL - Former IBF middleweight champion of the world, the Montrealer David Lemieux reveled that he really hopes to become the next Saul Canelo Alvarez’s opponent. “Alvarez is WBC and WBA middleweight champion of the world, then, my dream is to face him as soon as possible,” mentioned Lemieux to the medias Sunday morning. “I really believe I am deserving an another shot for a world title since my win by KO in the first round against the Irish Gary O’Sullivan, who was ranked sixth contender in the world when I beat him in 2018.”

September 15th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Lemieux (40-4-0) beat O’Sullivan (28-3-0) by KO in less than two minutes. Lemieux has not fought since, because he fractured a bone in his right hand in a training session happened in Montréal few months ago.

Camille Estephan, the Lemieux’s manager, said: “I am in negotiations with the David’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, and I really believe that a fight Lemieux-Alvarez can become reality. If Alvarez is saying yes to Oscar De La Hoya, we will confirm this fight in the weeks to come.”

The fight should be presented in Las Vegas. Former world champion, De La Hoya is the president of the Golden Boy Promotions organization in Los Angeles.

Lemieux believes he can cause a surprise against Alvarez (51-1-2), a Mexican considered as one of the best fighters on the planet. “I know what to achieve to beat a fighter like Alvarez,” said Lemieux. “I have now the experience and the maturity to handle a fight of this caliber. Since my defeat (TKO) against Gennady Golovkin in 2015 at Madison Square Garden in New York, I made so great progress technically and strategically. And I know I have the power to hurt the best middleweights in the world. And my right hand now, is in perfect health. I am very impatient to knock if Alvarez is ready to give me a chance for the WBC and WBA 160 pounds world title.”

Lemieux is 30 years old, Alvarez 29.
