Rocky Juarez Just
Doesn't Stop! Another Quick KO |
|
2000 Silver Medalist
Rocky Juarez (now 23-0, 16 KO's) ended matters in the
very 1st round tonight at the Pechanga Resort in
Temecula, CA. vs. Juan Carlos Ramirez with 3 knockdowns.
What was expected to be yet another tough test for
Juarez turned into a piece of cake when a single right
hand dropped Ramirez like a tree. Ramirez up on wobbly
legs managed to stay away from danger for the moment,
but another single right hand shot to the chin sent him
down again. The end appeared close as Ramirez beat the
count and the clock ticked down near the end of round 1,
but it never came as a left hook snapped Ramirez head
back while on the ropes and another right hand sent him
down and prompted the referee to jump in immediately
halting the fight at 2:59 of the 1st. Juarez, who had a
slow start near the beginning of his career, seems to be
picking up the pace and in brilliant style. He now gets
a shot at WBC Featherweight champion Injin Chi in what
could be one heck of a fight. Ramirez falls to 34-9, 14
KO's.

The most savage knockout of the night was by Timor
Ibragimov as he blasted Ron Bellamy with a thunderous
right. Sal Musumemeci’s Final Forum promoted the first

Sugar Ray Leonard
Impressed With 'Manila Ice' |

Legendary Sugar Ray Leonard and
featherweight People’s Champion
Manny Pacquiao
expressed mutual respect and pleasantries Thursday
at a chance meeting at the Wild Card Gym in

Manny test 'Manila
Ice.'" said an impressed Leonard
following Pacquiao's sparring session. "I promised
the camp I would not disclose what I saw today, but
I can see that trainer Freddie Roach has zeroed in
on a major weakness of Morales. But
if there was a new weapon in Manny's arsenal called
'Manila Ice' on display today -- it

3 time former World
Champion Shane Mosley (39-4, 35 KO's) was on hand in Los
Angeles to announce that he would be a part of the ESPN
Pay-per-view card that will be broadcast live from
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 23rd
Shane announced that he would be officially moving back
down to the Welterweight limit and that his first
opponent at this weight would be the tough # 2 IBF
ranked David Estrada (18-1, 9 KO's). The burning
question for this writer had to do with his trainer that
sat next to him on the podium, we know it's no longer
his Dad Jack, and this time it wasn't a Goossen. The man
who will be guiding Shane into this stage of his career
is none other than former Champion himself, John David
Jackson! "Actually, it came up about a month ago,",
recalls Jackson. I got a call that Shane wanted to meet
with me and I said no problem although I didn't know
exactly what the reason was. I thought maybe he wanted
me to come in and show him a few things, it was a shock
to me, but it was a good shock!"

JOSE LUIS CASTILLO
“If I was fighting
someone other than Julio Diaz, I might feel a
letdown because I have been looking forward to
defending against Chico Corrales for a long time.
But the fight did not happen. I was supposed to
fight Diaz before, too, and it also did not happen.
Ever since, Diaz has been doing a lot of talking,
saying I was scared of him. So, now, I am going to
teach him a lesson.
“I still want to fight Corrales, but I know I have
to take care of business on Saturday first. One
thing I have to do in this fight is start faster. I
started way too slowly in my last fight. It is not
going the distance.’’
JULIO DIAZ
“I have always been
the underdog, but this is a fight I have wanted for
a few years and I plan to shock the world. I am very
grateful that SHOWTIME thought enough of me to make
this fight happen. Jose Luis Castillo is the man in
the division. By beating him, people will start
believing in me, and that is important.
“Castillo is a big lightweight, but I definitely
feel I am going to stop him. People think I have to
box but I am coming to fight. I am not afraid to
exchange with him. All boxers get hurt and come back
to win. Nothing has come easy for me. This is going
to be a hard fight, but I am really confident and
very excited.’’
JEFF LACY
“Any time a guy fights for a world title he is going
to give it all he has got, so there is no way I will
take Rubin Williams lightly. You never know what can
happen in a fight. I am willing to get in with
anybody, any place, if the deal is right. Give me a
fair shake, and I will be there. Just say when and
what time.
“I am very thankful that so many of my fights have
been on SHOWTIME. Television is such a key in a
boxer’s career. I am a guy blessed with punching
power who keeps fans on the edge of their seats. But
without SHOWTIME, I would not have gotten nearly the
kind of great exposure that I have received in my
career. And, without exposure, it is impossible for
any young boxer to make a name for himself.’’

Roach Has Hiroshima Size
Expectations |
|
The big news is that trainer Freddie Roach
has devised a secret weapon, which he
affectionately calls "Manila Ice."
"We developed 'Manila Ice' under more
secrecy than the Manhattan Project," said
Roach. "When he unleashes it on March 19,
it will stop Morales cold. Manny may
become known as boxing's version of the
Enola Gay when he drops this bomb on
Morales."

Corley may get what
he asked for ... |
|
|
By Luis
"The Best" Cadiz
According to local newspapers in Puerto Rico, Cotto's
next defense of his WBO 140 lb. Championship may be
against Demarcus "Chop - Chop" Corley. This defense will
be taking place in New York City, on June 18th, exactly
one week after Gatti defends his portion of the 140 lb.
crown, WBC version, against Floyd
Mayweather Jr. Some minor details have to be ironed out,
but nothing is
expected to complicate matters. Turns out that "Vicious"
Vivian Harris, WBA
"regular" 140 lb. champ, was considered as a possibility
for Cotto on this
date, but Bob Arum found his services too steep in price
... in the neighborhood
of $750,000. I guess Corley is cheaper, we will see how
much he asks for at the
negotiations table with that 3rd round incident as
leverage. Anyhow, the
winners of both the Gatti vs. Mayweather Jr. bout and
the Cotto vs. Corley II
bout, will ultimately face each other towards the end of
this year. Sounds
great ... all we need now is to get it all on paper. As
for Corley, I guess
he's happy because he's getting the rematch he asked for
in the post - fight
press conference. How does that old saying go ... be
careful what you wish
for... you know the rest.
Stay tuned to boxing2005.com for updates!

Lunch With Ivan “Choko” Hernandez
WBO Super Flyweight Champion Ready For Fernando Montiel
and More |
|
Photo & Interview By Bret "The Threat" Newton
WBO Super Flyweight Champion Ivan “Choko”
Hernandez (20-0-1, 13 KO’s) will put his title
on the line on April 9th when he takes on
challenger Fernando Montiel (29-1-1, 23 KO’s) at
the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
Hernandez, fresh off an 8 round decision win
over Lee Cargle just 9 days ago, was relaxed and
confident at El Cholo’s Mexican Restaurant in
Los Angeles today where we had lunch and
discussed his fight with Montiel in April as
well as his future plans shortly down the line,
including a possible fight with Rafael Marquez. |
|
|
"After fighting Mark 'Too Sharp' Johnson it put my
name on the map. For fighting Montiel it’s going to give
me conformation that I’m the fighter who I really am and
that the Johnson fight wasn’t a fluke. Fighting a guy
like [Rafael] Marquez, who is an incredible fighter,
will definitely be the top for me."

Morales & Pacquiao Both
Confident |
|
Both Eric Morales and Manny Paquiao spoke to the
media via teleconference today about their
blockbuster fight on Saturday, March 19 at the MGM
Grand Garden Arena, as usual, Boxing2005 was there
to speak to both fighters. A confident Morales is
not worried about the fast starting Pac-man and is
sure his strength will prevail in the latter stages
of the fight. Morales is also sure that many of his
fans from California as well as south of the border
will be there to fill the seats and cheer him on to
victory!
As
for Manny, fighting at a higher weight does not seem
to concern him, he is working hard everyday against
very fast fighters and it is keeping him sharp, and
even though he is coming in at 130 pounds he will
still move like a featherweight. As to the fans in
the arena that night, Manny is aware Morales will
have a huge following, but he knows his countrymen
will also be in house to show support for their
homegrown hero!
Keep an eye on Boxing2005 as we will bring you the
entire transcript from both fighters’ conferences!

Hey
John Ruiz!
BE QUIET MAN!! |
|
Dear John,
Over the past couple of weeks you have sent out an open
letter stating that you are the most dominant
heavyweight in the division. Although I found this
shout-out of yours laughable at best, I just figured if
you got ignored that you would just go away! No such
luck for me though, because no sooner than I was
starting to forget about you, you decided to take aim at
your mandatory challenger James Toney.
Well now that you are demanding some attention, let me
throw some your way!
First, check out our poll from last week, it was placed
there on your behalf, you did say you were the top
heavyweight, right? Well, not according to the boxing
public John, in fact, you are the least respected of any
of the current Champions, you barely got any votes, the
numbers speak for themselves.
And although you say that even though all the heavies
talk about fighting you, they won't...... umm, John,
reality check time! I have seen every big heavyweight
fight over the past year and whenever anyone talks about
who they want to fight next, one name comes out of their
mouths and it ain't yours, it's Vitali Klitschko, now go
back and see who the fans picked as the number one
heavyweight champ in our poll, it's not a coincidence.
You then go on to complain about the "toe Tag" opponents
you have been fighting and in the same breath boast
about the quality of your opponents, Evander
Holyfield,Tony Tucker - as well as top 10 contenders
Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo and Kirk Johnson.
So make up your mind, are they "toe tags" or are they
top 10? Allow me to help you. Holyfield was years past
his prime when you fought him, Tucker...you are kidding
me, right? Kirk Johnson, I believe James Toney calls him
a Fat Ass Pillsbury Doughboy! Golata and Oquendo both
kicked your tail and somehow you were given the
decision, barely! Neither one of them are cream of the
crop and now you claim you can beat Byrd and Klitschko?
That's funny!
Later that same week you are quoted as saying, "I’m the
king of the heavyweight division; King Kong on top of
the Empire State Building and all of the others are down
on the street looking up at me." Why is it everytime
someone has an ax to grind they compare themselves to an
oversized and overweight ape? To the best of my
recolection that story ends with the big apes fat
carcass lying prone on the concrete, face up, and down
for the PERMANENT count.
And now you are complaining about fighting the number
one challenger, James Toney! Make up your mind John, do
you want to fight the top fighters in your division, or
are the "toetaggers" more to your liking?
Look, of course everyone wants a heavyweight tourney, it
doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!
And no one is ducking you John, get over it! I will
agree no one wants to fight you though, but not for the
delusional reasons you bring to the table. Face it, you
are boring, no one wants to see you against anyone, it's
worse that watching paint dry when you step into the
ring and the bottom line is no one will pay the top
dollars to see it, not the fans and not the promoters.
Vitali and Chris will eat you alive, they are far from
the stiffs you have beating up on, personally, I think
you are going to have a hard time getting by James
Toney. We shall soon see, but in the meantime, please
stop saying you are the man in the Heavyweight division
because you most definitely are not, ask anyone...we
did!

Vivian Harris: "I would
knock Cotto out" |
|
While I was watching the
Miguel Cotto vs. Demarcus “Chop – Chop” Corley fight,
two rows in front of me “Vicious” Vivian Harris was
seated studying Cotto. I mean, after all, Cotto and
Harris could be a possibility in the future, so it
doesn’t hurt Harris to be on top of things.
“Chop – Chop” Corley did something in the 3rd
round that wasn’t in the program, he hurt Cotto with a
right hand in the temple area. When Vivian Harris saw
this, I remember him looking back at us and saying,
“…Cotto’s hurt … Corley’s got him…” I have to admit,
Cotto did wobble but he showed the heart of a true
champion and recuperated and kept on fighting. But his
aura of invincibility showed a possible weakness, that
others might try to capitalize on in the future. Here’s
what the WBA 140 lb. Champion “Vicious” Vivian Harris
had to say to my handful of questions,
"I would knock Cotto out. Man … “Tito” is my big brother
you know …we’re brothers… and you know how “Tito” likes
to end things … same thing here."

Cotto Vs.
Corley...Unpredictable! |
|
|
Let us all go back
and remember what I wrote this past Wednesday
about the Miguel Cotto vs. Demarcus “Chop –
Chop” Corley press conference. I finished off
the article saying that boxing and nature have
at least one thing in common and that was that
both are unpredictable. Well, we did have Cotto
playing the part of the hurricane since the
opening bell, but we also had a very determined
“Chop – Chop” Corley trying to blow away Cotto’s
prodigy status. For a moment, the winds of
change wanted to make an unexpected appearance
in the “Coliseum Ruben Rodriguez” of Bayamon.
The |
|
|
public present,
which totaled almost twelve thousand, felt the
chill right down to the bone. But they didn’t
lose their confidence in the face of danger,
instead they blew right back with thunderous
cheers, all for the home town hero and future
superstar “Cotto…Cotto…Cotto”. Read on about
this night full of KOs because every single
fight in this card finished in either a KO or
TKO !!

Post – Fight Reaction From Cotto & Chop Chop! |
|
|
Demarcus “Chop –
Chop” Corley:
“I want to thank God
first of all for not letting us get hurt and that we are
here talking right now. I thank everyone that’s here and
HBO and the promoters … but I want the rematch. I’m
disappointed with the outcome of the fight and I feel
that it was the referee that took this fight away from
me not Miguel Cotto. I feel I would have taken Cotto in
the later rounds. The first time I went down it was
really a hip shot. I frustrated Cotto and that was our
game plan.”
When asked if who would win
between Miguel Cotto and Floyd Mayweather Jr., Corley
stated, “Floyd Mayweather would beat Cotto.”
Miguel Cotto:
“…I must admit that I
lost control, after that first round I wanted to finish
things off in the next couple of rounds. But I fight for
the people of Puerto Rico. I never was frustrated, it
was the heat of the moment.”
When asked about the weight
problem, Cotto kept on denying that a weight problem
exists when in reality the day of the weigh – in, this
past Friday the 25th, he needed to get on the
scale four times to make the weight.
When asked about a rematch
he answered, “If my people, my team, put the fight in
my path again I will take it.”

Cotto Receives Gift From
Hometown Referee |
|
Miguel Cotto was supposed
to have an easier than expected night vs Demarcus Corely,
however it turned into the true tough test for Cotto,
then ended with the aid of the 3rd man in the ring,
unable to give Cotto the chance to finally prove himself
in the 1st tough test he was given.
After coming in 17 pounds heavier than at the weigh-in,
Cotto appeared to have his way with Corely in round 1,
punishing Corely to the body and head with the right
hand and left hook. Cotto pulled Corely down from behind
the head unintentionally and the referee called in a
knockdown. However, Corley showed he was game and was
coming back with his own shots as the two traded after
the bell. This was turning into a real good action
packed fight.
In round 2, an unintentional low blow from Cotto
prompted the ref to take a point without any warnings.
In round 3, the real test came when Corely landed a huge
right hook to the temple and Cotto was in 'lala' land
doing the Zab Judah dance (you know, the one vs Kostya
Tszyu) and Cotto was all over the place in serious
trouble. This wasnt "oh, Cotto got hit with a good
shot", this was "WOA, Cotto is in serious trouble, looks
like he's going to go down". Cotto grabbed to hold
Corley, but Corely was having his way with him. Cotto
luckily managed to make it out of the round.
In round 4, a low blow from Corley prompted another
point deduction from the ref. In round 5, Cotto appeared
to have gained his senses and started landing his
combinations. After a body shot, Corely went down and
Cotto landed a late hit on the face of Corley. Corley
complained to the ref that he was hit late, but the
fight resumed without an warning. As Corley rose, Cotto
backed him up to the ropes and threw two glancing
punches that made Corley take a knee. He was not hurt as
the 2 punches did not even land. And that was it. The
ref stopped the fight over a clear eyed Corley at 2:45
of the 5th.
"This is a discrace!", yelled Larry Merchant.
So the referee stopped the fight when Corley who clearly
took a knee without any punches landing on him, yet in
round 3 Cotto was all over the place and didn't even
know where he was and the fight resumed. Whether the
referee favored Cotto or he didnt know what he was
doing, the fact is, Corley got robbed of his chance of
victory and Cotto got robbed of his chance to bail
himself out of trouble and show everyone that even like
Trinidad, he can go down and get up to finish the fight
himself (even though he didnt go down :) ) without the
help of the referee.

A questionable
"Intentional Headbutt" disqualified Rodolfo
Martinez (15-5-11 KO's) in round 10 and gave WBC
FECARBOX bantamweight champion Cecilio Santos
(18-4-2-10 KO's) the victory and the WBA
FEDECENTRO belt as well. The bout was a good
battle and it appeared that the headbutt was
more from some vigorous inside fighting as
opposed to a blatant |

headbutt. But the gash in
Santos forehead was too nasty to allow him to continue
and the referee DQ'd Martinez for the headbutt that he
deemed intentional.

Chicanito's Home Teetering From Rainstorms!
Humble
Warrior In Need Of Our Prayers!
|
|
Boxing2005 wants to send out our
prayers and best wishes to former World Super
Featherweight Champion Genaro "Chicanito" Hernandez
(38-2-1, 17 KO's) and his family, who are part of
some 20 people who have been left homeless by the
knockout fury of Caifornia's seemingly nonstop
downpour.
Hernandez owns one of six homes which
are yellow tagged because the 70-foot hillside
behind his home continues to creep forward. The
ground in his background is buckled, the fence has
collapsed and glass sunroom is shattered. Workers
are in the process of removing trees from the rain
soaked slope and hoping to cover it with plastic
before the next rainstorm hits. According to city
officials, who are not behind Hernandez and the
other homeowners, the slide is on private property
and his insurance carrier insists the
slide is caused by uncovered flood damage.
Genaro is one of the classiest nicest
and humble people to come out of the sport of
boxing, and we just wanted to express our concern
for his entire family during this trying and
difficult time.

On This Day Special:
McClellan vs. Benn a Decade Ago |
|
ON THIS DAY IN 1995, Nigel Benn KO'd
Gerald McClellan in the 10th round to retain the WBC
Super-Middleweight Title in London, England.
Just another one of my "ON THIS DAYS"? Hardly, this one
recalls one of the many tragedies boxing has seen over
the years. All of the deaths and permanent injuries are
terrible but this one which resulted in permanent severe
damage to Gerald McClellan somehow seems more dramatic.
Its now been ten years since Gerald McClellan and Nigel
Ben went to war for the WBC Super-Middleweight
Championship. Gerald McClellan, once a magnificent
athlete, is today under constant care, blind, nearly
deaf, and unable to care for himself.

Having just traveled
across the country as part of their tour to announce the
first Super Fight of 2005, 3 time World Champ Felix
Trinidad ( 42-1. 35 KO's) and Unified 154 pound Champ Winky
Wright ( 48-3,25 KO's) remained quite and respectful,
but on the other hand their respective Promoters, Don
King and Gary Shaw were being...well, Don King and Gary
Shaw. When King would stop chanting " Viva Puerto Rico!
Viva Puerto Rico", Shaw would chime in with his own
verbal warfare, which at times was complimented with
props as he produced a brand new Catchers mitt and
presented it to Trinidad, telling him he better learn
how to use it because he would be catching Winky's
punches all night long! Chances are Tito will be doing
some catching, mostly curves and off speed pitches, it
would be advisable for Winky to get a mitt of his own
and put some extra padding in it because Trinidad is
known for throwing some 99 mile per hour strike
out heaters!

Guilty Boxing building world-class stable |
|
“In ‘Guilty Fight Night’ we have the vehicle to bring
boxing back to the glory days when it was the most
watched sport in the world, “Guilty vice president Jay
Hassman explained. “We’re able to showcase our boxers
all over the world, boosting exposure not only for our
fighters, but for Guilty as well. But Guilty isn’t all
about broadcasting, either. We’re building a stable of
superstars, boxers fighting or who will soon be fighting
for major world titles. We have one world champion,
Melinda Cooper, and Cosme Rivera hopefully will be
fighting Zab Judah for the undisputed world welterweight
title in May. Some of our other fighters are knocking on
the door. For example, two Guilty fighters, Daniel Reyes
and Omar “Lobito” Soto, are fighting Friday night (Feb.
25) at The Orleans in the IBF 105-pound title
elimination match. Guilty already is having a major
impact on professional boxing and we’ve really just
started our business plan.”

WBO Jr.
Middleweight Champion Daniel Santos
Gets Luis's Handful
of Questions…
|
|
During the Miguel Cotto /
Demarcus “Chop – Chop” Corley press conference I had the
opportunity to interview Daniel Santos, the WBO Jr.
Middleweight Champion. The last time I saw him was when
he was defending his title against Antonio Margarito in
the Coliseum of Puerto Rico, September 11th
2004. That night he got into a war with Margarito but
due to an accidental head-butt, the bout was stopped and
Santos won on a technical decision. Since then, the
29-2-1 with 20 KOs fighter has not seen any action. With
the Condado beach as our backdrop, he took the time to
answer a handful of questions about his present and
future. Here's what he had to say:
Santos: "Once everything is in order I will look
towards unification, be it with Kaseem 'The Dream' Ouma
or Javier Castillejo. I would even consider going up to
