Muriqi, What Fight Were You Watching?
More So, To Tarver, What Fight Were YOU Watching?

By Bret "The Threat" Newton
In all honesty, the Elvir Muriqi vs. Antonio Tarver match-up was a C-class fighter vs. a B-class fighter, if that. It was supposed to be a tune-up and confidence builder for Tarver who was coming off a year layoff after losing very handily to Bernard Hopkins. Tarver's claim to fame will always be is 1 punch knockout over Roy Jones in their rematch. Sometimes styles makes fights and on that night he prevailed with a single punch, with his eyes closed at that. Tarver has never been exceptional or even very entertaining in any fights other than the Jones Jr. ones. He went on to lose to Glen Johnson, then win a rematch in two decent, but nothing special, fights. Losing to Hopkins easily shouldn't have been a surprise. Now, coming back against the "Kosovo Kid", no one really paid much attention, especially since it was the same night as mega match-up, Cotto vs. Judah. One either thought, "Eh, Tarver will win easy.", or "Tarver sucks, Muriqi will win".   Post Fight Quotes From Arum
By Dennis Bernstein at Ringside
Bob Arum, Top Ranks lead man let the crowded media room in on the direction he plans on going with his Champion Miguel Cotto after his victory over Zab Judah.

To facing his one time fighter Floyd Mayweather Arum said, "Floyd has 20 million in the bank, he's not going to get into the ring with Cotto!"

And to what's next for Cotto, "If Margarito beats Williams it's Cotto vs. Margarito at MSG."

Isn't It Sad: Chavez Jr. Has More Fights Than Cotto.
Julio "The Bum Beater-upper" Cesar Chavez Jr. has a record of 32-0, and while he fights bum after bum, Cotto has been in the ring with world class opponents, and has beaten them all at 30-0. One has to wonder, will Chavez step it up, or will he be breast fed opponents until 100-0?

Cotto Stops Judah In 11th In A Great For Boxing War
Cotto Staggered, Judah Staggered, Low Blows, Cuts, This Fight Had It All

Photo: Chris Farina - Top Rank

Miguel Cotto (now 30-0, 25 KO's) scored an impressive 11th round stoppage over Zab Judah in a highly entertaining match that had nearly all you could ask for.

Right from the beginning in round 1, the two felt each other out, but once they started throwing, the two were in a war, just as advertised. A left uppercut from Judah had Cotto wobbled and out on his feet. Cotto, trying to survive, landed a low blow that had Judah flailing to the canvas in pain. Cotto bought himself some time with that.

In round 2, Cotto got into rhythm and started to land combinations. Another left from Judah had Cotto staggered once again at the end of the round.

In round 3, a huge low blow from Cotto had Judah on the canvas again and referee Arthur Mercante Jr. had no choice but to take a point. Cotto was in trouble again and bought himself more time after a nasty cut that went from inside his mouth to the outside of his bottom lip.

In round 4, Cotto staggered Judah and a headbutt caused a cut over Judah's right eye.

In round 5, Cotto began to jab and easily outbox Judah who was was getting very tired.

In round 6, another accidental headbutt opened up a cut over Cotto's right eye. Judah was staggered by a right at the end of the round.

In round 7, Judah stopped Cotto in his tracks with a counter left. Judah was all over Cotto who was again in trouble, landing left uppercuts to Cotto's midsection to get himself back into the fight.

In round 8 Cotto began to land straight lefts the entire round and nearly sent Judah's head off as he fought off the ropes. Judah was nearly down at the end of the round.

In round 9, Judah's right eye really began to bother him and Cotto was all over him. Cotto pressured Judah to the ropes with a body attack and Judah took a knee, once in the corner.

In round 10, a left uppercut from Cotto nearly sent Judah down. Judah pounded his chest, giving his best, but it was not enough to stop Cotto.

In round 11, a combination to the head from Cotto sent Judah down to the canvas. Judah could barely survive as Cotto jumped on him to attack. Mercante stopped the fight shortly after another barrage against the ropes at :49 of the 11th. Judah falls to 34-5, with 25 KO's.

Chavez Jr. Beats Another Tomato, Who Cares?
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (now 31 Tomato Cans, 0 Fighters With A Pulse, 24 KO's), continues to fight opponents with losing records, this time against Grover Wiley who's last win was TWO YEARS AGO, against Chavez Sr. Chavez Jr. managed to land a left hook to the body that had Grover down in the first round. Two more knockdowns from the same body shot would occur in the 3rd. Who cares really? Chavez Jr.'s reply to fighting 19-0's Andre Berto was "Quien?", yet he doesn't say "Quien?" to Grover Wiley? Give us a break. Final Time was 2:27 of the 3rd. Wiley falls to 20-10-1 with 14 KO's.

Soto Smashes Pacquiao In 7th In Bloody War
Humberto Soto (now 42-5-2, 26 KO's) stopped Bobby Pacquiao in the 7th round after 6 big action packed rounds. In round 1, Soto went right at Pacquiao, scoring a knockdown that was more of an off balance slip. In round 2, Soto was all over Pacquiao, landing an assortment of combinations that had Pacquiao all over the ring and nearly down. In round 3, two huge right hands and two left uppercuts snapped Pacquiao's head out of his guard. In round 4, a nasty cut opened on Pacquiao's right eye nearly over an inch long over his eyebrow that caused the doctor to inspect, but let the fight resume. Soto went right after the cut, but a bit wild as Pacquiao was able to connect with a huge counter right that has Soto staggering to the ropes. Pacquiao has Soto in all kinds of trouble as Soto made it out of the round. In round 7, a huge right counter on the jaw has Pacquiao stumble to the ropes, then a left hook to the body on the falling Pacquiao made him unable to get up as the referee reached the full 10 count. Final time was 1:48 of the 7th. Pacquiao falls to 27-13-3 with 12 KO's.

Yuri Foreman Steals Win Over Thompson In Ugly Fight

Yuri Foreman (now 23-0, 8 KO's) won a split decision in a fight that had more holding and clinching than any fight could bare, with Anthony Thompson. The main due to the problem was highly incompetent and incapable referee, Charlie Fitch. Fitch would refuse the break the two, even during arm grabs and clinches against the ropes until the rounds were nearly over. A very ugly fight that most observers had Thompson winning by a small margin, but definitely a close fight than should've been a draw since neither deserved to win. Final scores were 96-94 for Thompson, 96-94 for Foreman, and a whopping 97-93 for Foreman. Thomson falls to 23-2 with 17 KO's.
Lets hope Charlie Fitch never referees a televised fight again.

Tarver Narrowly Escapes Real Life Rocky -
Dawson Overwhelms An Overmatched Ruiz

By William Trillo
Photo: Tom Casino - SHOWTIME

It was a night on SHOWTIME at the Connecticut Convention Center that was set up to put the 2 Champions in a marquee match up next, and for Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and Gary Shaw Promotions all went according to plan.

In the main event for the vacant and heralded (?) IBO Light Heavy title, Antonio Tarver made a somewhat rusty comeback but prevailed over a game Elvir Muriqi . The final tally gave Tarver a close majority decision with scores of 114-114, 115-113 & 116-112.

No doubt here that “The Magic Man” deserved the victory, but you can’t blame Muriqi for jumping for joy after the 12 round bout. He not only lasted the distance with Tarver, but he made a real good go of it and even brought to the crowd to their feet with his ambitious attack in the latter rounds of the fight. With that said, Elvir needs a reality check if he thinks he won the fight.

Tarver, who improved his record to 25-4, 18 KO’s, starred in the last Rocky movie as the villain Mason Dixon must have thought he was back in the ring with Rocky Balboa again as Muriqi and his big heart would never quit even though his skills were not that of a true World class challenger. And although he may not have been as sharp as he would have liked, Antonio does have a belt around his waist again, and that puts him in position for at least a couple more fights on the big stage.

One of those fights that will be discussed will be the winner of the semi main battle tonight, WBC 175 pound Champion Chad Dawson. In the opening bout to the televised Showtime card Dawson went through a game but way overmatched Jesus “Chuy” Ruiz who was just not ready to take the giant leap up from the # 15 WBC challenger all the way to the king of the green belted division. Try as he might, Ruiz was just not able to land that powerful right hand, no matter how hard he tried & tried & tried.

Chad Dawson, who remains undefeated at 24-0, 16 KO’s is a bonafide star at 175 pounds and if anyone can lay claim to the fighter of the night in Connecticut it was certainly Bad Chad. The crafty southpaw was never in danger as he pecked and popped his way for 5 rounds before he put his full arsenal on display, complete with new found power, and disposed of Ruiz at the 2 minute mark of round 6.

Note: Yes I went on record the morning of the fight stating that Ruiz was a viable contender, and if I had it to do all over again I would do the same thing. I am not about to sweep my predictions under the rug and hope everyone will forget about it. First of all, I know you won’t forget because I am already hearing about it, and second of all you have seen my wacky predictions before…and I am sure you will see them again.

Dawson May Have Bit Off More Than He Can "Chuy"
Written By William Trillo
Tonight in the opening fight on the Showtime broadcast Chad Dawson will put his WBC light heavy belt on the line against Jesus "Chuy" Ruiz. In the main event Antonio Tarver will be taking on Elvir Muriqi in another Light heavy attraction. The thinking is, this a great way to showcase 2 fighters, Dawson and Tarver, while prepping the boxing fans for a showdown between the two later this year.

Ngoudjo Wins Thin Split Decision In Wild Fight.
Down Goes Bailey. Down Goes Ngoudjo. Down Comes The Rain. Out Goes The Power. Bailey Closes The Gap. Ngoudjo Finishes Strong. Who Won?

Herman Ngoudjo (now 16-1, 9 KO's) won a razor thin split decision over heavily improved Randall Bailey in a wild night in Montreal, Canada. Ngoudjo would be coming off his lone loss, a split decision rightly disputed against Jose Luis Castillo that many had Ngoudjo the winner. This fight would start right off the bat as Bailey went right at Ngoudjo in the opening round, landing a huge right. Ngoudjo would catch Bailey and knock him down with two countering shots. In round 2, they traded again and a left hook by Bailey had Ngoudjo staggered across the ring, nearly through the ropes to score his own knockdown because his gloves touched the canvas in the process. In round 4, Bailey turned his back and winced in pain from a punch in the eye. Bailey signaled "time-out", but that's not a rule in boxing and the fight went on as Ngoudjo teed off on Bailey, nearly finishing the fight. During the round, heavy rain came down on the open arena that forced the crowd to pile into a heard like cows near the ring. The rain was pouring hard and suddenly the power went out throughout the entire arena. Both fighters rising from their stools to begin the next round, but the referee had to call time because it was way too dark. After a few minutes the emergency lights came back on and the fight resumed shortly after. What panned out was a series of very close rounds. This fight had both Bailey and Ngoudjo evenly matched in a very hard to score fight. Bailey would get the better of Ngoudjo in the 9th and 10th when a staggered Ngoudjo would be forced to fight off the ropes. Ngoudjo closed the 12th round trying for a knockout that he almost got with Bailey staggered. Final scores were 115-112 for Bailey, 115-112 for Ngoudjo and 114-112 for Ngoudjo.  Bailey falls to 35-6. with 32 KO's.

This fight was very close with either fighter winning a close decision, or a draw.

ESPN commentary led you to believe Bailey was winning easy in the latter part of the fight, failing to mention that most judges don't score 10-10 rounds, nor do they score 10-9 rounds when a knockdown has taken place which is what Teddy Atlas did. After knowing that, it would bring his score to a one point win for Bailey which is who Atlas had winning the fight.

Is Baby Faced Assassin At Odds With Golden Boy?

Written By William Trillo
Ever since Marco Antonio Barrera said during his post fight interview after losing to Juan Manuel Marquez, "Maybe it is time for me say bye-bye to Golden Boy", the writing has been on the wall, some will tell you the graffiti has been up there for a lot longer than that.

With yesterdays announcement that the September 15th Mexican Independence Day bout in Las Vegas will now feature Marquez vs. Jorge Barrios instead of a rematch with Barrera, it's become apparent that all is not well with Golden Boy Promotions and their President of Operations in Mexico, Barrera.
