Cleotis Pendarvis: "I Got
Caught With My Hands Down" |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
Less than two weeks ago, Cleotis “Mookie” Pendarvis faced off
against Dierry Jean in a fight he, like all fighters, fully
intended to win. But it was not to be, as Jean won by TKO in the
fourth round. I spoke with Mookie after that loss to get his
thoughts on what went wrong.
“I got caught of course, hands down. I got too comfortable and I
stopped focusing on his right hand. I was landing my
combinations pretty accurately. That cut that he got, they said
it was from a head butt, but I landed my left hand and then we
butted heads. Actually, I got the cut from that.

Hell, Miracles, The Ranting Of Madmen, & The Magically Appearing
Crowd; Or Just Another
Night Of Championship Boxing In Atlantic City |
|
By Tim Donaldson
What makes boxing so great is that it is so much like life,
mirroring a person’s struggle to be great, and if not great,
then at least to gain a little respect. Like life, sometimes it
can be predictable and sometimes it can be surprising. Sometimes
if you look closely at what seems to be the predictable, you can
even find the surprising. Alright, maybe sometimes you have to
look really, really deep.
It is easy to see the excitement and drama in the Lucas
Matthysse, Lamont Peterson fight. It was a fight fought for
pride. They fought at the catch weight of 141 pounds, meaning
that no titles would change hands regardless of who won. For
Peterson, a win would have meant redemption after failing a drug
test on May 9, 2012, cancelling his rematch with Amir Khan. That
cloud will now still be hanging over Peterson. For Matthysse,
his win signals his continued ascendency in the world of
international boxing. The two split decision losses, one to
Devon Alexander and one to Zab Judah, fade further into the past
and for some become even more questionable.

the ring for the first time in just over a year with a solid win
over Pablo Cesar Cano. The fight was close and action packed as
the two traded in the center of the ring up until the end.
Mosley appeared to close the show as Cano began to tire. Mosley
unleashed power right hands that would connect, but Cano refused
to take a step back. Final scores were 115-113 on all three
cards. This was Mosley's first win since 2009. Cano drops to

Matthysse Blows Out Peterson Easily In 3 |
|
Lucas Matthysse (now 34-2-1 ND, 32 KO's)
continues to be the most underrated and overlooked fighter out
there as he needed just 3 rounds with 3 knockdowns to dispatch
Lamont Peterson. From the opening round, Peterson's plan was to
stay away and that he did in the first round.
But he couldn't stay away the whole fight as he was caught on
top of the head in round two that sent his legs wobbling and
down to the canvas for the first time in the fight. Referee
Steven Smoger continued a slow count and even pushed Lucas back
to help Peterson get out of the round.
In round 3, Matthysse went right at Peterson, dropping him again
with a monster hook. Peterson would fall to the canvas again as
he tried to get up, and although he finally beat another slow
count, the fight should have been called off. Smoger let the
fight resume, pushing Lucas back again to help Peterson regain
his senses, but that did not help. Lucas went right in with
another assault, dropping Peterson right away and Smoger had no
choice but to wave it off at 2:14.
Peterson falls to 31-2-1 with 16 KO's. This fight was fought at
a catch weight therefore Peterson keeps his IBF Junior
Welterweight Title.

Alexander Stops Human Punching Bag Purdy After 7 |
|
Devon Alexander (now 25-1, 14 KO's) put on a
completely one-sided performance over replacement Lee Purdy, who
was more focused on talking that punching. From round 1,
Alexander stood right in front of Purdy as promised and banged
away. Purdy simply kept his guard up and that's about it. Purdy
offered no footwork, no head movement, and very little punching.
What Purdy did offer back was a constant shaking of his head to
notify he wasn't hurt after every punch he took flush, and
non-stop talking to Alexander throughout the fight. Purdy didn't
appear hurt or in trouble, but he was losing every second of the
fight and was not offering anything in return to even show a
glimpse that he could gain any sort of momentum, even despite
Alexander beginning to slow down. Purdy's trainer asked the
fight be stopped after the 7th round had concluded. Purdy falls
to 20-4-1 with 13 KO's.
