Ricky Hatton's Calm
Before The Storm |
|
The fight that Ricky Hatton has been
training his entire career for is just
one day away and "The Hitman" couldn't
be more serene. "I'm really enjoying
myself in Boston, it's a great fight
town," he said between sessions with the
enthusiastic American media, in town to
cover Hatton's clash with WBA
Welterweight Champion Luis Collazo,
presented by Fight Academy and Banner
Promotions at the TD Banknorth Garden
this Saturday and televised live by in
the US by HBO and in the UK on Sky Box
Office.
Normally a light welter, Hatton looked
rock-solid wearing the extra seven
pounds of the welterweight class at the
press conference yesterday and was in a
jovial mood after receiving a gift from
his Brooklyn based opponent. "Collazo
gave me a six pack of Guinness as a
present," quipped Hatton, "which will
take me all of five minutes to drink
after the fight!"

Floyd Patterson:
A Legend Who Is Still Alive In Our Hearts And Minds |
|
|
By Jaspreet "The Executioner" Panchhi
Former heavyweight champion (55-8-1,
40 KO’s) Floyd Patterson died on May 11th,
2006 aged 71. The Hall of Fame fighter was suffering
from Alzheimer’s disease and prostate cancer.
Patterson was born on January 4th,
1935 in Waco, North Carolina and was raised in
Brooklyn. He was the third of eleven children. At
the age of 14, the American stepped into Gramercy
Gym, which was led by Cus D’Amato. Two years later
in 1951, D’Amato prevented Patterson from stepping
into the professional boxing world.
In 1952, the American emerged the
middleweight Olympic gold medalist at Helsinki,
Finland. Patterson won his first professional fight
on September 12th, 1952 and in 1953, he
was named “Ring Rookie of the Year” by the New York
Boxing Writers.

WBC Would Mourning Day
For The Death Of Floyd Paterson |
|
Former world
heavyweight champion and former Olympic monarch Floyd
Patterson died at the age of 71 in his home of New Paltz,
New York, and for this profoundly saddening news the WBC
has decreed a World Mourning Day within the
international boxing community, which has undoubtedly
lost one of its greatest figures.
Floyd Patterson was born on January 4, 1935, in Waco,
North Carolina, and conquered the world heavyweight
title under the guidance of Cus D’Amato.
As an amateur, he had an outstanding career, winning the
gold Olympic medal in the middleweight division during
the Olympic Games of 1952. That same year he made his
professional debut and on November 30, 1956, he won the
world vacant heavyweight title with a knockout in five
rounds over Archie Moore.
I remember him with great affection, and we were great
friends. I had the opportunity to treat him personally
on several occasions and knew of his rectitude and
spirit of service, particularly when he was appointed
Chairman of the New York Athletic Commission.
On one occasion he went to South Africa, and he was
going to visit that country again, but because of the
apartheid regime prevailing by that time, the WBC
convinced him not to go. Aware of the fact that his
travelling to South Africa would mean a betrayal of his
race, he did not go.
Patterson had a record of 55 wins (40 of them by KO),
eight defeats and one draw. He was a great human being
and athlete, and had a loving family. Boxing has lost,
without a doubt, one of its most distinguished and
unforgettable champions. May he rest in peace!

Rahman Set To Take On #1
Rated Maskaev |
|
|
World Heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman says he
'hasn't slept right' since he was stopped by Oleg
Maskaev in 1999.
"I really gave it to him in practically every round
in our first fight -- then I got caught. That's not
going to happen again," said Rahman at a Top Rank
press conference Wednesday in New York City.
The first fight had a chilling, brutal finish when
Maskaev slugged Rahman with an overhand right and
sent him flying through the ropes.
"Rock made a mistake that night," said Steve Nelson,
co-manager of Rahman. "It will be corrected on
August 12."
Rahman's chief trainer Thell Torrance was not in the
corner for the fight vs. Maskaev. Torrance joined
Team Rahman when 'The Rock' stopped Kali Meehan in
an elimination bout in November, 2004.
"Rock and I have worked very well together," said
Torrance. "He will be prepared to fight and defeat
Maskaev."
"There's a lot of pressure on me all of a sudden,"
said Maskaev. "Rahman wants to get even, but I'm not
going to let it happen. I've worked too hard (10
straight wins, 8 by KO) to get into this position."
Rahman will be off to Baltimore
on Saturday. He is the Grand Marshall of the
Preakness Celebration Parade which begins at 11 a.m.
Rahman vs. Maskaev II 'America's Last Line of
Defense' will be promoted by Top Rank in association
with Dennis Rappaport Productions, Caesars Palace
and Wynn Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack Center in
Las Vegas. Tickets at $600, $400, $300, $200, $100
and $50 can be purchased at the Thomas and Mack box
office, online at
www.unlvtickets.com
or by calling (702) 739-FANS. Rahman vs. Maskaev II
will be broadcast on HBO Pay Per View.

Hopkins Larger Than Life
In New Orleans |
|
|
Bernard
"The Executioner" Hopkins promised that he would be
bigger for his June 10th fight with Antonio
Tarver at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and live on
HBO Pay-Per-View. But even he didn't know how big he
could get until he saw his larger than life likeness
hanging from the Sheraton New Orleans hotel where
Hopkins is training.
The hotel, located in downtown New Orleans, has hung a
25' x 25' cling wrap image of Hopkins next to the Canal
Street side front entrance. "After Katrina, having
someone like Bernard Hopkins choose New Orleans to train
for his next big fight, means a lot to the people and
the continuing recovery of the City," said Tommy Morel,
Director of Marketing Sheraton New Orleans. "The people
that pass by the hotel, which is a very busy area, know
he is here supporting the city which in turn gives their
spirits a tremendous lift."

Danny Green Relishes
Grudge Match
With Anthony Mundine |
|
Australia's ferocious super middleweight Danny Green
won't have to wait long to get bitter rival Anthony
Mundine in the ring as the two clash on Wednesday, May
17 at the Aussie Stadium in Sydney. At stake is the #1
position in the WBA ratings but for Green, it's not just
business, it's personal. "In November of 2001, Mundine
was interviewed on National TV and he called me a bum,
basically disrespecting me," recalled Green. "He
continued to say that, so enough was enough and I fired
back saying, 'well mate if that's how you feel then
let's do it, let's get it on'. And he avoided it for a
long, long time. But now money talks so he figures the
time is right."

Former

Mayorga could be fined by the Athletic Commission of the

commission lawyer Keith Kizer said Thursday.
Kizer said boxing regulators notified Mayorga of the
violation Wednesday.
The
Nicaraguan has 20 days to respond before the commission

Guess Who's Back... |
|
|
The
biggest announcement of the day was the
return of Shane's Dad, Jack Mosley to
Sugar's corner. The last time we saw the
elder Mosley working in his son's corner was
during his loss to Winky Wright. With
Shane's latest trainer, John David Jackson,
working with Bernard Hopkins for his
upcoming bout with Antonio Tarver, Shane
felt the best man to fill the void would be
his Father. "John David made a prior
commitment. My father will be able to pick
up the slack," Mosley said. "My father is
the only one who really knows my style and
how I fight."
Jack
commented, "We have a special bond," he
said. "When he asked me to come back to
train him, I said it would be great.....I
will train him like I have always trained
him. I'm |

close to my son and
will give it my all."

Rivera and Mayorga, both
got what they deserved.
"El
Gallo" earns his world title, while "El Pollo" took a
beating! |
|
|
By Mike Indri
If this past Saturday
night proved anything to the millions of boxing
fans, especially those that tuned into Showtime’s
Jose Rivera vs. Alejandro Garcia battle or paid to
see Oscar De La Hoya pummel Ricardo Mayorga on HBO’s
Pay-Per-View, it’s that sometimes justice does get
served. To Jose Rivera, a Worcester, Ma. Court
officer and the new WBA Super Welterweight World
Champion, justice has prevailed, and it is sweet!
The classy, hardworking
and under-appreciated Rivera will always be
connected with the drastically over-rated,
foul-mouthed Mayorga ever since that fateful night
of April 17, 2004 when the so called "El Matador"
failed to make the 147lb. weight limit to challenge
for Rivera’s WBA welterweight crown.

Ringside LA With Johnny
Ortiz:
"Oscar Puts
Punctuation Mark On The Pussycat That Roared." |
|
Writing this article, I will from time to time revert to
some of the comments I made in my last article
concerning the fight this past Saturday night between
Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga. In writing it, I
tried to emphasize just how slim the possibilities of
Ricardo Mayorga winning his fight with Oscar were.
After getting hit with a hard jab, right hand, and then
a devastating left hook that dropped him like a sack of
potatoes, Ricardo would later say how surprised he was
by Oscar’s power. I had pointed out that Oscar, being a
converted southpaw, made his left hook even more of a
lethal weapon, Oscar has always been a good puncher,
Mayorga just had to learn the hard way. I wrote that
Ricardo had never been in with a fighter with the hand
speed of Oscar, that when Mayorga threw wild punches and
missed, he would leave himself wide open, making him
vulnerable for the Golden Boy’s educated, quick
counterpunches. Knowing that Oscar is old school,
learning early on that everything comes off the jab, I
knew he would keep a hard jab in Ricardo’s face in order
to get off his combinations and power shots. He did
just that from the very first round on. Knowing he had
hurt Mayorga, Oscar knew it would only be a matter of
time; a fighter knows and feels these things.

Judah’s Won’t Be Working In Nevada
Until April 07
Ellerbe Will Be Off Until September |
|
|
Marc
Ratner of The Nevada State Athletic Commission informed
Boxing2006/pound4Pound that they made their ruling on
former undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah, his
father, trainer and co-manager Yoel Judah and Floyd
Mayweather Jr advisor Leonard Ellerbe.
Ellerbe will be 50 g’s lighter in his pocketbook and
won’t be able to work a corner in Nevada until August.
(One month before proposed Mayweather/Oscar bout is set
to take place in Nevada, if you were wondering) .
The
Judah’s won’t be able to put their craft into work in
Nevada until April of 2007 and Zab and Yoel are short
250 & 100 G’s respectively.
Ratner
also told us that there is nothing in The Muhammad Ali
Act that he is aware of that should stop the terrible
trio from performing their act in other states and
countries.
In our
eyes, that is a small price to pay for the melee they
all were involved with in the ring on April 8 of this
year. We commend Nevada’s Commission for coming down on
them and we only hope other States will take a look at
the incident and consider their options wisely.

Crystal Ball May Reveal Oscars Plans |
|
Boxing2006/Pound4Pound has looked into its crystal
ball and we see the image of Ricky Hatton fighting Oscar
in September.
During the post fight press
conference The Golden Boy gave us hints to look into
the future. The time frame of the upcoming
coming weeks before the big announcement (Hatton
fights Collazo next Saturday), the fact that Oscar
says the media will be in for a big surprise when
Golden Boy makes said announcement, and the alluring
possibility for Oscar and his company of a fight
that would grab world-wide attention,
a GLOBAL PHENOMENON! All of America, England and
Europe would be watching and paying for the biggest
international fight in the history of boxing. Maybe
put Calzaghe on as a co-feature against Tarver.
Showcase British Olympic sensation Khan with one of
Oscar's young Golden Boys...
Stay tuned for more, the ball is
still a tad cloudy and visions are not 100% clear
yet, but we think that young tiger we see in the
glass ball is singing "God Save The Queen"

Cotto Gym Work-Out |
|
Story & Photos By Luis
"The Beast" Cadiz
Today, WBO
140 champ, Miguel "El Angel" Cotto & Team,
departed for Florida once again. The last time
he went to Florida was in preparation for his
past fight against Gianlucca Branco. According
to Cotto himself, it was hard for him because he
was away from his home and family, but it was a
sacrifice that he understood was necessary for
him to reach optimum performance in all
levels... focus, physique and fine tuning of
boxistic skills. This past March 4th,2006,
everyone witnessed the end product of that
training camp as he demolished Gianlucca Branco
in 8 rounds. So repeating the dosage of
isolation and concentration in Florida was the
logical step to take, in preparation for his
upcoming bout against the undefeated Paul
Malignaggi in Madison Square Garden, scheduled
for June 10th. I caught up to the champ just
before leaving, here's what he had to say:
We
witnessed Malignaggi's verbal abilities in the
post fight press conference after the Branco
bout, what do you think of his verbal tactics?
I am
focused on the fight and all I have to do is
concentrate on what is done in the ring. I don't
care what he says outside of the ring because
when he steps into the ring in June, he's going
to have to use his fists and not his mouth to
talk... he can't punch with his mouth.

Hatton Lands In Boston
After Final Training Session |
|
Ricky Hatton has officially begun his
one man invasion of America after
touching down at Logan Airport this
morning on a flight from Manchester,
England. The occasion marks the final
countdown to Hatton's hotly anticipated
US debut taking place next Saturday at
the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston where
he'll meet WBA Welterweight Champion
Luis Collazo on a joint Banner/Fight
Academy promotion televised live on HBO
World Championship Boxing.
Just one day ago Hatton astonished
onlookers by hammering trainer Billy
Graham, wearing the notorious "body
belt", for 15 unrelenting rounds in the
sweltering Manchester gym, Phoenix Camp,
that Hatton calls home. Despite being
the larger man by several weight
divisions, ex-fighter Graham was hard
pressed to keep upright during the
withering assault unleashed a clearly
motivated Hatton.
With thousands of Brits due to flood
Boston this weekend to see their massive
UK idol in action, reigning WBA Champion
Luis Collazo may find himself fighting
essentially in front of the same hostile
crowd that has unnerved many a previous
Hatton opponent before the first bell
has even rung.
Fight Academy and Banner Promotions
present the Ricky Hatton - Luis
Collazo WBA Welterweight title clash
held on Saturday, May 13 at the TD
Banknorth Garden in Boston, MA,
televised live by HBO World
Championship Boxing at 9:45PM
ET/6:45PM PT. Tickets can be
purchased online at

In Boxing2006.com's "Fan

"Who Will Win: Mayorga or DeLaHoya?".
A close starting argument by both, but it would be
Cheapo's pick of DeLaHoya that would win him the fight
after last Saturday's performance by Oscar had Mayorga
on the canvas. Travis falls to 0-1.

Ring rust? What ring
rust? In his first fight in 20 months, ‘The Golden
Boy’, Oscar De La Hoya showed that he was better than
ever, impressively stopping Ricardo Mayorga in six
dominating rounds to win the WBC junior middleweight
championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas,
Nevada.
The end came at 1:25 of
the sixth frame as De La Hoya scored his third knockdown
of the fight, which was televised on HBO Pay-Per-View.
For De La Hoya, who improves to 38-4 with 30 knockouts,
the win earned him an amazing ninth world title,
spanning every division from junior lightweight to
middleweight, and it was his 19th victory and
12th knockout in 23 championship fights. And
even more impressive is that after close to 14 years in
the pro boxing game, Oscar is still golden.
Golden Boy Promotions congratulates our president and

A Golden Night For The
GBP Team |
|
Saturday night was a big
one for the Golden Boy Promotions team at the MGM Grand
Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and in addition to
the stirring win by President Oscar De La Hoya over
Ricardo Mayorga, five other fighters from the GBP team
emerged victorious in their bouts.
Junior middleweight star Kassim ‘The Dream’ Ouma, who is
co-promoted by Russell Peltz, survived a first round
knockdown to earn a hard fought split decision over
Marco Antonio Rubio in a bruising 12 round bout that saw
both men give and take some hellacious bombs without
giving in.
Two recent signees who are co-promoted by Golden Boy
Promotions and Sycuan Ringside Promotions, junior
lightweight Joan Guzman and junior welterweight Jorge
Paez Jr., made impressive debuts with GBP by outpointing
Javier Jauregui and Lowell Brownfield, respectively, in
undercard bouts which were also televised by HBO
Pay-Per-View.
2004 US Olympian Rock Allen moved to 7-0 with 5 KOs with
a six round decision win over Juan Hernandez, and Puerto
Rican super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo improved to
9-0 with 5 KOs by decisioning Torrence Daniels over
eight rounds.
And even though GBP fighters Rubio, Jauregui, and Aaron
Garcia fell short in their bouts tonight, Golden Boy
Promotions congratulates all our warriors, who – win or
lose – always gave their best.

DeLaHoya Gives Mayorga
Beating Of A Lifetime
Puts Mayorga Down In 1st, & Knocks Him Out In 6th |
|
Oscar DeLaHoya put on an absolute show and beat down of
Ricardo Mayorga who's only moments in the fights were
few. Oscar came right out and put Mayorga down in the
opening round with one of the biggest left hooks he's
ever thrown. Mayorga never saw it and was flat on his
back and dazed. DeLaHoya continued his easy domination,
despite a few moments he let up and Mayorga was able to
land some clean shots where Oscar was able to take them
no problem. In the 6th, DeLaHoya came out in destruction
mode and put an absolute beating on Mayorga with a
combination of punches that never seemed to end that put
Mayorga in staggering mode into the ropes, then finally
to his knees. Back up off the canvas, Jay Nady looked
closely and Ricardo didn't look as if he really wanted
to continue, but his courage wouldn't let him give up
and Oscar came in and began to demolish Mayorga with
shots from all over, giving Mayorga the beat down of a
life time and Jay Nady had no choice but to come in and
stop the bout at 1:25 of the 6th.
Ouma Survives 1st Round Knockdown To Win Split
Kassim Ouma, now 24-2-1 with 15 KO's, survived a
1st round knockdown at the hands of Marco Antonio Rubio
to come back and win a tough fought 12 rounds split
decision. Despite Rubio being game, it was pretty clear
Ouma won pretty much every round after, yet judges Dalby
Shirly oddly had a score of 114-113 for Rubio. What
fight was he watching? 117-110 and 116-111 were the
other two scores that represented the Ouma win. Rubio
falls to 33-3, 1 with 30 KO's.
Joan Guzman, now 25-0 with 17 KO's, put on a dazzling
and clinical performance over Javier Juaregui through 10
rounds by scores of 100-90 on two cards and 99 to 91 on
the third. Juaregui falls to 51-13-2 with 35 KO's.
In a four round attraction, Jorge Paez Jr. upped his
record to 8-0 with 7 KO's with a unanimous decision over
previously undefeated Lowell Brownfield. Peaz sported
similar showboating as his father and it cost him in the
4th round when Brownfield was able to land a clean left
hand that stopped Paez from goofing off. Scores were 39
to 37 and 40 to 36 on two cards. Browfield falls to 7-1
with 2 KO's

Oscar Throws A Cloud Over His Farewell Plans |
|
Written By Nat Gottlieb &
William Trillo
Photo: Bret "The Threat" Newton
Oscar De La Hoya hasn't even been
hit with a roundhouse right hand
from Ricardo Mayorga, but this week
he's sounded a bit punchy.
For months he's been saying that he
wants to go out with style and a
bang, that he has huge plans for a
farewell fight in September that
would solidify his place in boxing
lore. But on Monday's "Tonight"
show when asked by host Jay
Leno what would happen if he lost to
Mayorga on Saturday night, Oscar
said, "If I lose this fight, then I
retire! If I lose this fight I hang
up the gloves and focus on other
things!"
Say what? Er, that's not exactly
what you've had the media cranking
out overtime for the last several
months. What's up, Oscar? Is this
now become a do or die fight,
instead of a prep for a September
farewell? Are you saying you won't
fight Pretty Boy in September if you
lose? Do you even know what your
plans are? Or are you just thinking
out loud on your feet?
We're genuinely confused. For months
there was going to be two more
fights then adios muchachos, and
then at the last minute now you're
talking like this may be the last
one if Mayorga becomes a party
pooper.
From Winky Wright we could expect
this degree of flakiness, but Oscar,
you're the businessman with a
multi-million dollar promotion
business. You're the one with a good
head on your shoulders.
It'd sure be nice to tune in to
your fight Saturday night knowing
what's at stake. But Oscar, you have
left your fans hanging at the last
moment. For a promoter who likes to
orchestrate a good fight scenario,
you apparently are having trouble
organizing your own bout.
But...
Irregardless of whether this is or
is not Oscar's last fight,
"Parting
is Such Sweet Sorrow..."
Whether Oscar De La Hoya beats
Ricardo Mayorga Saturday night, by
the Golden Boy's own admission his
illustrious career is winding down.
It is a career that began in glory
with a Gold Medal in the 1992
Olympics, and would see him go on to
win world titles in 6 weight
divisions and fight the best boxers
of his generation.

Hatton's Trainer Billy Graham
Predicts KO Victory |
|
Ricky Hatton's trainer Billy Graham heads to America
fully confident of victory going into The Hitman's WBA
Welterweight title challenge of Champion Luis Collazo on
a joint Fight Academy/Banner Promotions venture at
Boston's TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday, May 13. Having
previously trained World, European, Commonwealth and
British Champions, Graham has turned his keen eye on
Hatton's opponent. "Collazo is a good fighter but I have
no doubts that Ricky will beat him," remarked the
Manchester legend. "I think it will be very lively at
first, while Ricky adapts to the southpaw thing, but I
see Ricky as starting to break him up after a few rounds
before stopping him."
