While Playing Villain,
Mayorga Secretly Apologized To Oscar

By William Trillo
Like every great actor, Ricardo Mayorga saved his best for the final act.

Whether it was a calculated maneuver or not, Ricardo Mayorga  once again stole the spotlight from the leading man and star of "Danger Zone," Oscar De La Hoya, on Wednesday.

Mayorga not only showed up drastically late for the final press conference of their junior middleweight championship fight on Saturday, but just before the conference scene closed he revealed a stunning, possible surprise ending that was calculated to leave us dangling until the opening curtain.

  ShoBox Quotes
SHOWTIME will kick off the Cinco de Mayo weekend with the first of excellent back-to-back fight cards on Friday, May 5. In the main event on “ShoBox: The New Generation” (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), North American Boxing Association flyweight champion Cesar “El Gallito’’ Lopez (18-2, four KOs) defends against Glenn “The Filipino Bomber” Donaire (15-2-1, nine KOs). The vacant North American Boxing Organization 112-pound belt will also be on the line in the 12-round bout.

In the 10-round co-feature, undefeated super welterweight Juan Manuel Buendia (12-0, four KOs) collides with hard-hitting Alexis Division (16-2, 13 KOs).

CESAR LOPEZ (18-2, four KOs) 111 pounds
“I adapt in the ring. To stay in front of Donaire is a mistake. I don’t want to get caught with a right hand. I will be more cautious. I was ready for either brother (Nonito or Glenn); they’re both good fighters. I think Glenn will be one of the toughest fighters I’ve had. I’m ready to go the distance and work him.”

GLENN DONAIRE (15-2-1, nine KOs) 111.5 pounds
“The last few fights I wasn’t 100 percent into boxing. For this one, I focused as much as I could. I’m a hard puncher, and I knock out guys with my left and my right. I hit harder now. It’s not about how you win, it’s about how you perform. I’m really ready for this, I can’t wait.”

JUAN MANUEL BUENDIA (2-0, 4 KOs) 147.5 pounds
“I’ve dedicated myself to boxing. I’m no longer working another job. I’ve trained four weeks. I came to win. I don’t know how, but I will. I’m ready. No one fighter is better than another. It’s all luck. I feel my preparation will make me lucky. I don’t think Diviso’s height will give him the advantage; he’ll just fall harder.”

ALEXIS DIVISION (16-2, 13 KOs) 150 pounds
“I don’t feel any pressure. This is a good opportunity but it’s not a step up. I’m really not sure how good this guy is, I just plan on beating him. All I know about Buendia is that he’s undefeated until tomorrow.”

  DeLaHoya: "It's On!"
Despite some incendiary statements by WBC junior middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga at Wednesday’s final press conference, Saturday's challenger, Oscar De La Hoya, assures boxing fans that there will be a fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night.

'The fight is on,' said De La Hoya, who will be looking to add another world championship belt to his trophy case in the long awaited 'Danger Zone' main event.  'I’m ready, Mayorga's ready, and we’re going to go to war on Saturday.

Sharmba Mitchell Seeks Shot At Third World Title

All questions as to how a 35-year old former two-time world champion could rebound from a loss to the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer, Floyd Mayweather, Jr., and defeat a younger, stronger fighter were answered last night when Sharmba Mitchell pounded out a clear, unanimous-decision victory in the ten-round welterweight main event over rugged Jose Luis Cruz in Cathedral City, CA.

With his impressive win, which was seen by a national TV audience on ESPN2’s “Wednesday Night Fights” -- presented by Goossen Tutor Promotions – Mitchell

(57-5, 30 KOs), known as boxing’s “Little Big Man”, proclaimed himself worthy and ready to step in for the Ricardo Mayorga if the crazy man continues his antics of pulling out of the fight.  “I weighed 146 ½ at the weigh-in and 155 entering the ring last night.  Oscar said he was weighing 151 yesterday. I’m serious, I’m prepared to fight tomorrow at the super welterweight level,” stated Mitchell.

“Sharmba looked sensational against Cruz,” promoter Dan Goossen declared.  “He said he was ready to fight the winner of Gatti-Baldomir right after the fight, but with Mayorga hanging out there, he called his manager Nate Peake and said he would be willing to fight this Saturday against Oscar.  Crazy business this boxing.”

  WBO Title Ring For Cotto
World champion Miguel Cotto today was honored by the World Boxing Organization in San Juan, Puerto Rico where he received a beautiful ring to commemorate five successful world title defenses.

Cotto, one of the best amateur boxers in the history of Puerto Rico and its most popular world champion at this time, stopped Gianluca Branco of Italy on March 4 of this year in Bayamon, Puerto Rico to retain his junior welterweight title for the fifth time.

"It really is an honor to receive this ring. It is a symbol of the hard work we as a team have done over the last few years," said Cotto.

The ceremony was presided by Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, presidente of the WBO and fellow countrymen of Cotto.

Cotto won the world title on September 11, 2004 in Puerto RIco by stopping Kelson Pinto of Brazil.

Cotto then stopped former world champion Randall Bailey in December 2004 in Las Vegas. In 2005 he stopped DeMarcus Corley in February, Mohamad Abdulaev in June in New York and Ricardo Torres in September in Atlantic City.

  Ricardo Mayorga:
‘I Will Fight Oscar De La Hoya on Saturday!’

‘El Matador’ Vows to Knock Out ‘The Golden Boy’ in Less Than Six Rounds

LAS VEGAS—World Boxing Council super welterweight champion Ricardo “El
Matador” Mayorga confirmed today that he will step into the ring against
“The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya to defend his title at the MGM Grand
Garden Arena and on HBO Pay-Per-View on Saturday night.
Mayorga sent word to members of the media asking them to join him at his 3
p.m workout at the Las Vegas Boxing Club, just off the Las Vegas Strip, to
make his announcement.
“I have decided to fight,” Mayorga said.  "I’m a man and I will defend my
World Boxing Council super welterweight title against Oscar De La Hoya on
Saturday night.”
The Nicaraguan bomber added emphatically:  “Look out.  I’m going to knock
Oscar out in less than six rounds.”
Mayorga’s promoter, Don King, was very happy to hear Mayorga’s comments.
“I commend Ricardo Mayorga for doing the right thing,” King said.  “That’s
what I told him to do all along.  Now he just needs to knock out The Golden
Boy and the world will be his oyster.”

"Danger Zone" Undercard Quotes - Ouma, Rubio...

Only days away from Saturday's epic bout between Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on HBO Pay-Per-View, early indications are that the undercard bouts on the 'Danger Zone' card are going to be just as explosive as the main event.

In the main co-feature, exciting Kassim 'The Dream' Ouma (23-2-1, 15 KOs), the former world junior middleweight champion, will try to move one step closer to regaining his crown when he squares off against perhaps the hardest puncher he has ever faced, Mexican knockout artist Marco Antonio Rubio (32-2-1, 29 KOs).

By now you know, Ricardo Mayorga is making demands for 8 million dollars instead of the 2 million on his signed contract. The agitation level is growing and there are still 3 days before the fight is supposed to take place.

Everything that went down today is more of the theatrics and hype that has surrounded this very high profile championship fight.

From Mayorga presenting Oscar a dress to wear into the ring on Saturday night, to his grabbing the microphone when everything was over and announcing he may not show up come Saturday night if he doesn't get compensated....well, it's all just a part of everything we come to expect from Danger Zone

Garcia vs Rivera - Perez vs Kirillov Final Quotes

Photo: Tom Casino - SHOWTIME

The 20th anniversary celebration of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING continues with a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLEHEADER on Saturday, May 6, on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast). In one of the 12-round world title fights, Alejandro “Terra” Garcia (25-1, 23 KOs) defends his World Boxing Association super welterweight belt against local favorite and former world welterweight champion Jose Antonio Rivera (37-4-1, 24 KOs). In the first half of a twinbill promoted by Don King Productions at the DCU Center at Worcester, Mass., talented, exciting southpaw Luis “El Demoleder” Perez (23-1, 15 KOs) defends his International Boxing Federation junior bantamweight belt against mandatory challenger and No. 1 contender Dimitri “The Baby” Kirillov (28-2, 10 KOs).

ALEJANDRO “TERRA’’ GARCIA

“I want to thank God and SHOWTIME for this opportunity. I love SHOWTIME for giving me a chance to show what kind of fighter I am. This is great exposure for me and I really appreciate it.

“I believe once more people see me fight, I will start to get more respect. They love me in Tijuana but that is where I am from. I know my time is coming and that I must win Saturday.

“This is going to be a great fight. I know Rivera is very strong, and I am not underestimating him.

“I’m willing to fight any of the 154-pound champions. I’ll fight any of the top contenders. But all they want to do is fight the old guys. They are afraid to fight young guys like me. They know they’ll lose.’’

JOSE ANTONIO RIVERA

“This is the best 154-pound world title fight of the night and I hope everyone can see it. No one will be disappointed. Thanks to all for making it happen. I am proud and honored to be fighting on SHOWTIME.

“I have been in this sport a long time, and this my greatest opportunity for the world to see me fight, and win. I really want this. I have a ton of respect for Garcia coming to Worcester to defend against me.

“There is no way this cannot be a war. People raved how exciting my fight was against Luis Collazo, but this one is going to be better. I am prepared to do whatever it takes and give my absolute all to win.’’

LUIS PEREZ

“I want to thank Don King for getting this fight on SHOWTIME and for the opportunity for me to fight in this great country again. I am very prepared and look forward to demonstrating my ability for everybody to see.

“I don’t know much about the challenger, except he is the No. 1 contender and I have to respect that. This will be a great fight. I know he did not come all the way over from Russia to lose.

“I have worked hard to become a champion, and worked even harder to remain one. There are a lot of good fighters in the 115-pound division, but I feel I am the best. After Saturday, I welcome the opportunity to unify the titles against any of the world champions.’’

DIMITRI KIRILLOV

“This is my first opportunity to fight in the United States and it is very important for me to put on a good performance for the American public to see. I want to thank Don King and SHOWTIME for this chance.

“I am a good boxer with good boxing skills and technique. I had a great training camp and sparring in Los Angeles for this fight.

“Perez is a great champion, but I am ready to give my best. My lifelong dream is to become a world champion. I came close in my first try, but lost. I don’t’ plan on letting anybody down this time.’’

Calzaghe Puts Tarver, Taylor and Winky On Hit List
Although Joe Calzaghe's opponent for his upcoming title defense on July 8 has yet to be announced, the "Pride of Wales" wastes no time in declaring just who he wants to face in the ring later this year. "Antonio Tarver is my main objective," said the WBO and IBF Super Middleweight Champion. "I'd also love to fight the winner of Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor. Those would be two massive opportunities out there for me, but obviously, they're all fighting in June so we're looking at the autumn as a possibility."   Breaking "Danger Zone" News - Mayorga Threatens To Pull Out
Mayorga: "Don't Be Surprised If I Don't Show Up In The Ring Saturday Night

Ricardo Mayorga showed up extremely late at the final press conference today, obviously agitated when he reached the podium because of money issues and threatened to pull out of the fight Saturday. Mayorga warned the press: "Dont be surprised if I don't show up in the ring Saturday night if they don't come up with some more money."

Then a member of the press shouted: "So you're the 'chicken' then?"

Mayorga yelled back: "Im not chicken, you guys aren't the ones paying me."

ESPN's Contender Suffers From Network Poweritis
Written By William Trillo
Photos By Big Joe

Boxing's matchmakers traditionally complain about alleged "road blocks" the Big Two networks -- HBO and Showtime -- put in their way, but now it seems promoters are getting similar treatment from ESPN's "The Contender" series.

Specifically, ESPN is taking a page out of the notebooks HBO and Showtime are accused of using by nurturing their stars with record-padding mismatches.

The Contender producers also function as promoters. They are there to get their fighters the best possible exposure and matches they can. But promoters frequently complain and whine (it's part of their job description) that the networks would rather put their fighters in against lesser caliber opposition to puff up their records for bigger paydays down the line.   Somebody's "0" Must Go

It’s the classic crossroads matchup – two unbeaten fighters zooming to the top finally meet with the winner being allowed to move forward while the loser is forced to regroup.  On May 18, cruiserweights Felix Cora and Vadim Tokarev will put their undefeated records on the line when they face each other in a featured bout on ‘Tribal Pride’ at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena in Hollywood, Florida.

‘Tribal Pride’, which is headlined by the Interim IBF Lightweight Championship bout between Ricky Quiles (39-6-3, 8 KOs) and Julio Diaz (32-3, 24 KOs), will air live on pay-per-view beginning at 9 pm ET / 6 pm PT. ALEJANDRO “TERRA’’ GARCIA

“I have had a great camp. I am ready. I can’t wait to fight. I wish it was Saturday now.

“I am a low-key person. I feel I can get along with anybody. Rivera seems like a nice guy and we have been friendly. But that all changes once the bell rings and the fight begins.

“He wants want I have and I know he will try very hard to get it. But he is not going to get my belt. I like being champion.

“I keep getting asked about the crowd, and how fighting in his backyard will affect me. It is good for Rivera that he has a lot of fans, but it will be just me and him in the ring.’’

JOSE ANTONIO RIVERA

“I know there are going to be a lot of my fans at the fight, but I hope those that aren’t tune it and watch (on SHOWTIME) because this is going to be the best 154-pound world title fight of the night.

“There is no way this fight cannot be a war. We both come forward. We are both coming to win.

“What is a little weird for me is that my main concern going into the fight is that I don’t have any concerns. There is nothing that I could have done better. I am totally prepared and very confident that I will go in and do my job.’’

  4 Days Until "Danger Zone"

LAS VEGAS—"The Golden Boy" Oscar de la Hoya arrived at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to a throng of fans less than one hour before champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga, who was celebrated upon his entrance as well.  Both fighters looked confident and fit as they made their way thru the lobby and shared brief comments before heading to their respective suites.

"The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya—"It's great to be back at the MGM and particularly this time when I am the one who's fighting.   The hotel looks fantastic and to see all these people here shows how excited they are about Saturday night too.   It's going to be a great fight and I am so ready to get back in the ring."

"Mayorga made the biggest mistake of his life by talking the way he has from the beginning of this promotion.   He definitely got under my skin but he certainly did not get in my head.   He doesn't realize that he's made it worse for himself and on Saturday night he going to know what I am talking about."

World Boxing Council super welterweight champion Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga showed just as much confidence as he entered the makeshift ring in the hotel lobby and climb atop the MGM Grand lion.

"I left my training chickens in Miami because I don't need them anymore.  The real chicken is already here.   I know he's horrified and nervous with everything I have said to him throughout this promotion.   What he should know is that I meant everything I said and it's only going to get worse for him Saturday night."

On May 6, 2006, Oscar De La Hoya will enter the “Danger Zone” to challenge Ricardo Mayorga for his WBC Jr. Middleweight title at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.  This is a fight that has ignited the fire within the fight fan, a fight that pits the normally good-natured Oscar De La Hoya against an offensive, beer drinking, cigarette smoking, professional amateur.  Mayorga is a very hard puncher, I will give him that, but his cover was blown when he nailed Vernon Forrest with one of his haymakers from left field in their first fight.  In the rematch, Vernon was ready for the Mayorga ambush, although after twelve rounds, Ricardo was on the receiving end of a majority decision (112-114, 115-114, 114-114).  I had Vernon winning the fight; Vernon would have won the fight going away if he hadn’t fought so cautiously through the first four rounds.  In his last fight on August 13, 2005, Mayorga had to go the twelve round distance in winning the vacant WBC Jr.Middleweight crown against household name Michele Piccirillo.

De La Hoya Visits Jay Leno's Tonight Show
Could This Be Oscar's Last Bout?
The Golden Boy made an appearance with Jay Leno on Monday night to discuss his upcoming bout with Ricardo Mayorga this Saturday at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The most interesting quote of the evening came when Leno asked Oscar what he would do if he lost this fight to Mayorga. Without hesitation De La Hoya said,"If I lose this fight, then I retire! If I lose this fight I hang up the gloves and focus on other things!"

A candid and honest response from Oscar who already has a September 16th farewell bout in the works.

Brian Magee Targets British & Commonwealth Titles
Long before Joe Calzaghe took apart Jeff Lacy two months ago in Manchester, Irish southpaw Brian Magee achieved the same result during his glittering amateur career and in less than one month's time, the Belfast slugger will set forth to rip the British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight titles from the grasp of brash champion Carl "The Cobra" Froch. The two meet at London's historic York Hall on a Maloney Promotion taking place on Friday, May 26. "Carl Froch comes into this fight with a good pedigree," admits Magee. "He's not someone I can take lightly but I've been in with better fighters and faced better competition; I am definitely the more experienced man."   Fighters Predict DeLaHoya vs. Mayorga
FELIX “TITO” TRINIDAD—Three-time World Champion (welterweight, junior middleweight & middleweight) with one of the highest knockout percentages in
boxing history at 81%.
PREDICTION—DE LA HOYA, DECISION
VIEW— "It's going to be a really hard fight between the two fighters.  De La Hoya hasn't fought in a long time, but should dominate based upon his speed and intelligence in the ring.  Oscar should win by decision, and leave the ring while he's on top."

VERNON FORREST—Former Undisputed Welterweight Champion who lost twice to Mayorga
PREDICTION—DE LA HOYA, DECISION WIN OR LATE ROUND STOPPAGE
VIEW—“Mayorga is very dangerous early.  But De La Hoya is an exceptional boxer so he should be able to avoid trouble by staying away in the early rounds.  On the other hand, De La Hoya tends to fade in the later rounds so he can’t wait too long to begin his own attack.  I also think De La Hoya’s chin is highly underrated.  He can take it.  So if he has to mix it up, expect him to weather any storm and either stop Mayorga late or get the decision.”  Click Here For More

Sultan Ibragimov Calls Out Sam Peter

When Warriors Boxing Promotions learned that number two IBF Heavyweight contender Ray Austin had decided that he would rather wait around and hope for the best than fight unbeaten # 5 contender Sultan Ibragimov for the sanctioning body’s number one mandatory contender’s spot, the IBF was forced to look elsewhere to appoint a worthy challenger.

Next on the IBF’s list will be number six contender and former World Champion John Ruiz, who has until Wednesday to decide whether he will face the heat of Ibragimov. Sultan’s cousin Timor already scheduled to fight number three contender Calvin Brock in June, Ibragimov wants the leading available contender, number four ranked Samuel Peter.   Duva's Heavyweight Trifecta: Peter, Minto, Marrone

Since it’s Kentucky Derby week, let’s use some racing jargon to describe Duva Boxing’s big Friday night in Uncasville, CT. Promoter Dino Duva registered a heavyweight trifecta at Mohegan Sun Arena with three impressive performances on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights.

In the main event, Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter scored a devastating first round knockout victory over Julius Long in a heavyweight battle that was over before it started. Peter, sharp and aggressive from the opening bell, unloaded a series of combinations before Long went down for good at 2:35 of the first stanza. Peter captured the vacant NABF heavyweight title with the win.

Ratner Denies Golden Boys Request
Boxing2006/Pound4Pound.com spoke directly with Marc Ratner of The Nevada State Athletic Commission and he told us that Mayorga cornernman, Stacey McKinley, will not be barred from working the corner of Ricardo Mayorga this Saturday night.

Golden Boy asked for a meeting to discuss the presence of McKinley who was suspended in 2004 for using ammonia smelling salts to revive his fighter Tito Mendoza during his loss to Librado Andrade.

"We spoke to the California Commission, and they told us that Mr. McKinley had paid his fine and served out his suspension, he did everything he was supposed to do. There is no reason why he will not be allowed to work Mayorga's corner on Saturday night," said Ratner.

Ratner informed us that he has already notified both parties as to the commissions ruling.

Although the request was denied, it's pretty clear that Golden Boy is firing back at Mayorga who has taken plenty of cheap shots during events leading up to the fight, and this request, although denied, is sure to not sit well in the mind of the feisty Nicaraguan.

  Night of Champions on DirecTV
Story & Photos By Luis "The Beast" Cadiz

WBO 105 pound champ, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon, pleased his hometown crowd with the 10th defense of his title. The Coliseo Mario "Quijote" Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, was the place where thousands of fans witnessed Calderon's defense plus an action packed under card. It is a shame that after this 10th defense, "Iron Boy" will not be able to unify his crown in the 105 pound division, a division he has ruled with an iron grip. No other champ wants to risk getting the boxistic lesson of their life so the only way up for Ivan Calderon is up, to the 108 pound division. Believe me, he is really that good! Tonight was no exception...

  6 Days Until "Danger Zone"
Flying from his Puerto Rican-based home and training camp, the “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya touched down at Van Nuys airport in Los Angeles earlier this evening to begin the final week of preparation for his championship mega-bout against Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 6.   This world championship match is being promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and Don King Productions and will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

De La Hoya, flown stateside by private jet, was accompanied by Team De La Hoya—including trainer, Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his brother Joel De La Hoya Jr. —as well as his wife Millie and new son Oscar Gabriel.  “I can’t wait to fight,” said a fresh and ready-looking De La Hoya.  “With my family and team surrounding me, I feel excited and extremely confident that I will capture another world title Saturday night.”

“I had a tremendous training camp.  Everything went so well and I feel very comfortable and very fit at 154 pounds.”

De La Hoya will stay in Los Angeles to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Monday before heading to Las Vegas where he will make his grand arrival at the MGM Grand Tuesday morning.

Acelino Freitas - a world champion once again!
"Popo" wins ugly on HBO "Boxing After Dark" at Foxwoods

By Mike Indri
MASHANTUCKET, CT - At the fight’s opening bell it was obvious that Acelino "Popo" Freitas had something to prove, to himself, and to his fans.
Filled with nervous energy, Freitas came out throwing wild, lunging punches.  This should have made things a little easier for the usually sharp, precision punching, master boxer Zahir Raheem.
Raheem, the WBO’s third ranked fighter, never fought like the accomplished fighter he is known to be and surely did not fight anywhere near the level of a fighter who had soundly defeated the legendary Erik Morales last September.

  Chapman Now Trained by Mayweather

In light of his admittedly sub-par performance against Matt Hicks at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma, and live on last weeks’ ESPN2’s “Wednesday Night Fights” broadcast, undefeated heavyweight hopeful JD “The Natural” Chapman, 22-0 (20 KOs), has parted ways with his former trainer and will now be prepared exclusively by well-respected Jeff Mayweather.

“I'm really excited about seeing JD become the fighter he can become under Jeff's tutelage,” said manager Scott Hirsch. “He's been getting by on talent alone until now. I think Jeff Mayweather is one of the best trainers in the game today and I know he'll bring out the best in JD.” Click Here For More

  Malignaggi’s voice continues to roar
Outspoken Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (21-0, 5 KOs), preparing for the fight of his life June 10th against World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (26-0, 22 KOs) at Madison Square Garden, refuses to tone down his act despite advice to do so from all corners.

“What I do is talk, it is part of my mental make-up, and it got me this fight,” Malignaggi explained. “This is Paulie Malignaggi at his best. People are going to keep hearing me lash-out at my opponents for the rest of my career. Like me or not, I’m a ticket seller. I’m not going to tone it down just because this is a big fight. Talking gets me psychologically up and ready for the fight, agitates people, breaks down some opponents, and draws interest.
