Floyd Mayweather Sr. Tells
His Side Gives Thoughts On Chad Dawson Too
In one of his first interviews since Oscar De La Hoya announced Freddie Roach would be in his corner for the much anticipated Super Bout with his son Floyd Jr., Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. opened up to Pound4Pound.com in this exclusive interview. “As far as De La Hoya and my son is concerned, I stand back and out the way, that’s were I stand, far away from that, this is my thing and this is what I do, I train who ever I’m training and now that’s Chad not De La Hoya or my son. I am able to divide the two and let it go whatever happens, I am willing to deal with it, with no distractions. I feel good about what I am doing because at the end of the day it is Oscar De La Hoya’s money and he don’t want to come up off of it, and that’s on him. It’s going to be the chance he takes. Greed don’t overcome common sense, that right there tells you the story”, said a matter of fact Mayweather.
Elaborating Sr. said, “As far as my son, the distraction would not have been with me and my son, had I had the fight with my son with De La Hoya. A lot of people were asking me how would you have felt, this way or that way. Look man it’s a business, my son is in the business and I’m in the business, I ‘m a trainer, that is how I make my living, Anybody who challenges a guy that I am training, they are simply challenging me, Son, brother, cousin, they got to deal with me, I never called out my son. Oscar got the call from my son to fight”.
“I think me and my son have been at odds for a while and it has been probably more at me than De La Hoya. At the end of the day he is still my son if I train Oscar or not. I don’t wish nothing bad towards my son, he is my son and he has a job to do, just like Oscar has.”
As far as Dawson goes, Floyd Mayweather, Sr. in a short period of time focused on preparing Chad Dawson to battle Tomasz Adamek for the WBC Light Heavyweight Championship of the world Saturday night at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.
Mayweather, Sr. said, “I think Chad has come a long way in a short period of time since we’ve been together, believe it or not he is faster, we are working on timing and all is working good. I’m teaching Chad how to lead off with his jab, stay busy with his jab up and down. Also fainting and hooking off of it, we are working on a hole lot of different things especially coming from the other side. I think that Adamek is goanna have some difficult problems with Chad”.
“It would not surprise me if Chad stops him. There was a lot of things that I had to change when Chad got here. There was a lot of things he was doing I did not like, he was telegraphing punches, some of his punches were too wide, He didn’t know nothing about faints, didn’t know nothing about stiff bombs, he might have heard the word pivoting, but none of that was going on. Right now I have him working to the body more. Adamek uses his jab, he is an aggressive fighter who throws a lot of combinations but I think there is a way I showed Chad how to block a lot of those jabs and come back with his right hand. Adamek to me is no more than a punching bag with a swivel on top of him, there is no defense, he is easily hittable and we are going to take advantage of that”.
“I think Adamek’s nose has been broke 2 or 3 times and it might happen again come Saturday night. I want too see Chad win this fight for many different reasons, for his family so he can better his life and get himself out of predicaments that he is in. I think that Chad just needs to follow the blue print he has, to just listen to me and do as I tell him. If he do that, I guarantee it will happen’.
“Chad will do a masterful job, especially coming from the left side, Adamek is right handed and if he comes in fighting right handed he will get hit with everything, Chad should hit him twice as much than anyone else has been hitting him coming in from the right side. Don’t be surprised if you see this man get stopped Saturday night, don’t be surprised”.
“He is very capable of stopping him. Chad said to me the wherever he was he was not learning anything. His confidence level is very high going into this fight. In a short period of time he learned quite a bit for sure, He is a total different fighter”. |
