Eddie Sanchez
used a consistent jab and stinging right cross to defeat Carlos
Bojorquez for the GBU Americas Jr. Middleweight Championship in
front of a capacity crowd at the beautiful Pechanga Resort &
Casino, Temecula, CA. The fight, presented by Pechanga and
Ringside Ticket, Inc. will be aired on KCOP channel 13 in
Southern California the week of April 1st.
In a rough
contest that kept referee Ray Corona busy, Eddie Sanchez jabbed,
grabbed and danced his way to a unanimous ten round victory over
defending champion Carlos “El Elegante” Bojorquez. Aided by a
four inch reach advantage, Sanchez kept the hard charging
Bojorquez at bay with a good left jab and right cross. When
that didn’t work, Sanchez pushed or pulled at Bojorquez,
frustrating the champion. “I was trying to out box him,
explained Sanchez. I saw his punches coming and I tried to stop
them from coming in.”
Sanchez did his best work in the middle of the ring where he
could stick and move. In the middle rounds Sanchez found the
uppercut to be an effective weapon. Hindered by the length of
his opponent, Bojorquez tried to trap Sanchez in the corners of
the ring. His sweeping left hook missed often, but did
considerable damage when it landed. A Bojorquez hook dislodged
Sanchez’ mouthpiece in the tenth, sending it two rows into the
crowd. Ultimately, Bojorquez landed his hook too infrequently
to impress the judges and surrendered his belt to Sanchez. The
final scores tallied 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94.
In the opening bout of the evening bantamweight Kalisha “Wild
Wild” West shut out Elizabeth Cervantes (1-7-0) over four hard
fought rounds. A two-handed puncher/boxer out of Murrieta, CA,
West nearly floored Cervantes in the second round. With the
victory West enhanced her perfect record to six wins with no
defeats.
Making his professional debut, featherweight Jerry Mondragon
dropped Hector Reynoso (2-4-1, 1 KO) three times in the second
round prompting referee Ray Corona to call a halt to the bout.
Mondragon, fighting out of Fresno, CA, showed poise and a
thunderous right hand in stopping Reynoso.
Every time welterweight Hugo Nunez (3-5-1, 3 KOs) landed a punch
he hurt Alex Bogarin. The question of the bout was whether
Nunez would land enough blows to offset the busier and more
accurate Bogarin. The scorecards answered the question: 39-37,
40-36 & 40-36 all in favor of Bogarin (7-5, 3 KOs).
Welterweight Alan Velasco (8-0-2, 2 KOs) earned a unanimous
decision over Colorado Springs, CO fighter Julio Lanzas (6-14-4,
3 KOs). Velasco, fighting out of Boyle Heights, CA dominated
the action, winning by scores of 59-55 and 60-54 twice.
Riverside, CA fighter Jose Reynoso improved to eight victories
against one defeat in a six round Jr. welterweight bout against
David Hernandez. Reynoso peppered Hernandez to win every round
on route to the unanimous decision.
